Callum Wilson had a big job ahead of him starting the game against USA as England's number nine striker. It must have felt strange with Lingard and Alli surrounding him, but he was going to be the focal point for the team going forward. Callum will have been praying for a moment to score on his England debut and with number nine on his back he had the nation watching his every move.
It could have been a dream start on eight minutes when Wilson had a chance from six yards from a cross from the right, but he didn't make good contact with only Guzan to beat. On 10 minutes though Wilson broke through from a Lingard pass from deep and Brad Guzan took Wilson down in the box and it was surprising that a penalty was not goven.
Wilson's holding up of the ball was tested and he had to do well at that with other slow to support him at times. He almost turned smartly enough to make something out of an England free kick on 19 minutes but the ball didn't come down for Callum. Callum did have a part to play in England's second goal in holding the ball up, just inside the box, before Sancho found Trent Alexander-Arnold who found the bottom corner of the net.

Wilson did Better on 38 minutes bringing a ball down from Chilwell in the box, turning his defender before getting his shot away that Guzan saved near his feet. Callum was able to stay up field rather than doing any defensive work as he was an out ball if England broke quickly. Sancho was particularly impressive on the night, but it was Wilson who was going to get the headlines.
Callum made a great start to the second half stretching the play down the right and getting behind the USA's defence before making a cross. Wilson almost drifted onto a ball from Alexander-Arnold in the box, but only found Miazga when he tuned and Lingard couldn't get to the ball.
Wilson was coming deeper now to get involved. Callum was making space for others well, but England were finding a third goal hard to come by. Wilson survived the first round of subs on 58 minutes when England brought three players in including Rooney. It was good to see Southgate give Wilson time to see if he could be presented with another goal scoring opportunity.
Callum came close again on 75 minutes when Alexander-Arnold crossed form the right but Wilson was closely marked and his shot span past the left post. We only had to wait one more minute before Bournemouth fans could celebrate with Delph crossing from the left and Wilson getting in front of Brooks, at the near post, steered his shot past Guzan to make it 3-0 to England. The signature salute followed and it was job done.
Gareth Southgate even gave Callum a big hug as he came off a minute later to congratulate him on scoring on debut. I expect Gareth had told Callum at half-time not to worry about the early miss and while it wasn't a performance where Wilson could really say he had a perfect game, he did more than enough to keep himself firmly in Gareth Southgate's thoughts.
In other news, Harry Arter was an unused sub in Republic of Ireland's 0-0 draw with Norther Ireland.
