Wilson can expect interest to grow in him this summer

Spurs and Everton are willing to battle it out for Callum Wilson's signature. Everton are the latest team that are said to be gathering a bid of £35m for the prospect for signing England forward Callum Wilson. The eyes of the Leagues' top Premier League clubs can see goals with Callum and while it might not be too much problem if only one or two clubs see Wilson as a target, it may become a summer of unwanted transfer speculation and bids for AFCB's No 13 if he does exceedingly well in the Nations League.
Callum Wilson has everyone's attention.
Callum will no doubt be on the main pages of most of the national newspapers this summer if he does get to start in an England shirt. Heaven knows what the press will be like of England actually win their first senior trophy since 1966 and if Wilson gets the winning goal. AFCB would become one of the nation's most well-liked teams and the interest from those wanting to poach the young England striker could start to escalate as well as the possible transfer fee.

But it's all hypothetical at the moment. Wilson has only made two appearances for England and scored on his debut. The jump up to what captain Harry Kane has achieved is a pretty big step and Wilson could well be the man who is asked to fill those boots this summer if Kane is not fully recovered. There is competition from Marcus Rashford as well, but the pathway for Wilson is opening up and it is likely to be a busy summer for him.

That puts Wilson right in front of the managers who are trying to strengthen their attack for next season. Whether we like it or not, Wilson will be linked with potential moves and the pace of that could well build into something that intensifies as the transfer window nears closure, especially if some seriously big money gets banded about.

Bournemouth will particularly resist wanting to sell to a club like Everton who they want to catch, but if Bournemouth succeed in holding onto there most prized asset they have to ensure that he is not burnt out for the new season. It may only be a couple of international games over the summer, but the transfer talk rumour mill also takes its toll on players if they start to think they can move and become disappointed that it doesn't happen.

I have my fingers crossed that Wilson sees his future at the club that got him the international cap and that winning something while at Bournemouth is an ambition he wants to fulfil.

Can AFCB really find the quality needed in the Championship?

There is plenty of paper talk about AFCB plundering the Championship this summer. They have already picked up Lloyd Kelly from Bristol City and rumours are that they are tracking Connor Roberts of Swansea, as well as Kalvin Phillips and Jack Clarke of Leeds Utd and Liverpool's Harry Wilson at Derby County. But are they likely to keep finding gems like David Brooks at this level who will take to the Premier League in their first season and be a match for the very best?

Are there more gems like David Brooks
playing their football in the Championship?
It may take a while for such players to bed in. They are having to move club and get used to the pressure of being up against well recognised names who are world-class. I suppose AFCB don't have to build a club that can challenge for the top 10 yet. By gradually adding quality which is perhaps a year or two off really setting the highest standard at AFCB, they could do enough to survive and later thrive.

However, as soon as AFCB do pick up great talent in the Championship they become immediate targets for the bigger clubs. Once tested at Premier League level these players soon come on everyones' shopping list. Eddie Howe's exceptional reputation as a manager may not be based on his recruitment team spotting these players but in Howe's own ability to keep hold of them at the club.

AFCB are entering a new phase. The older players who won promotion are moving on and they are being replaced with a younger team. Whether these players can quickly take root is going to be what AFCB's chances of staying in the Premier League is base on. It could be a big risk, but finances may have pushed AFCB to approaching their transfer strategy in this way, because the very top clubs don't discard their players to lower Premier League clubs very often and the foreign markets are still something that has not really dominated the thinking of AFCB's recruitment yet.

Online-Bookies.org.uk
The age profile of young players in the Championship is also something that attracts AFCB.The wages will be lower than bringing in the players that have already played a season or two in the Premier League so w can expect AFCB to keep plundering the Championship whenever an U21 international comes up for purchase.

Keeper search takes Cherries to Anfield's door

Bournemouth are clearly making their voice heard in search of a new goalkeeper. The Sun claims that their latest target is Liverpool's Simon Mignolet, who has made just two appearances for Liverpool this past season. Mignolet has plenty of experience, but the price is expected to be in the region of £15m and it is anyone's guess whether Mignolet can find his best form again.
Could Simon Mignolet come out of the shadows to star at Dean Court?
The keeper position is going to be perhaps AFCB's most important transfer of the summer. While they have great young keepers, it appears that Eddie Howe wants more experienced hands to rival Artur Boruc for the number one shirt. Since 2016, Mignolet has been more of a spectator than Liverpool's main keeper choice, and while Loris Karius could not keep the shirt long for Jurgen Klopp, Alisson has been one of the best keepers in the Premier League.

AFCB seem to make a beeline for keepers that have fallen by the wayside and attempt to resurrect their careers. It has worked with Boruc and it also did with Darryl Flahavan, and Lee Camp, but Asmir Begovic has been a bit of a disappointment, even if he started well. Mignolet is still going to be in good shape at 31 and he has been at the top of the sport in playing for Liverpool. He'll know what pressure is like and it would be quite a big name for Bournemouth to sign.

What Mignolet's value is worth is where AFCB might struggle to see Liverpool's point of view on him. AFCB have not paid more than £10m for a keeper and if they are to jump up to £15m there are probably other candidates that also come into the mix. Having been linked with Nick Pope and Jack Butland, AFCB are perhaps just testing the waters of a number of experienced keepers to see where they can perhaps get the best deal.

What I wonder is would Mignolet have the confidence to be a number one keeper again in the Premier League and whether he would view AFCB as a positive move for his career? While Alisson has not missed many games for Liverpool, Mignolet has been waiting a long time to get game time even if he is the number two for the Champions League final. Severing links with a top four club is never easy for a player and Mignolet would have to see AFCB as a new challenge that could help the Cherries' rise up the league - does he still have the appetite for that?

Would Liverpool winger be a great signing for AFCB?

With the play-off final between Derby and Aston Villa taking place yesterday, there was a great opportunity to see the work of Liverpool's Harry Wilson who is on loan at Derby. The Sun has been clear that AFCB are among the top-runners to gain the right-winger's signature, if Derby slipped up against Villa as they did, although Wolves, Crystal Palace and Brighton are also keen on the 22-year-old.
AFCB still look for new players to bring to Dean Court.
A sticking point for fans and AFCB is that Harry Wilson is reported to cost in the region of £25m as Liverpool look to cash in on their youngster. AFCB may only make three or four signings, and it does seem a big fee for a player that has only played one game in the Premier League, even if he is a full Welsh international. The 18 goals he has scored in the Championship are a good indication that he has the talent to step up.

He is very much like his Welsh team-mate David Brooks and both can play on the right-wing. Wilson has a great left foot and looks to cut inside and yet he can also play through the middle or on the left. Whether he is too similar to Brooks is perhaps a worry in that Spurs are said to be very interested in Brooks and Harry Wilson could be being lined up as a replacement.

Eddie Howe seems to want new wingers every window, but with Junior Stanislas making just 11 starts and Jordan Ibe nine starts, it is possible that one or two of these right wingers could leave AFCB this summer, which would create a gap for Harry Wilson. If AFCB can hold on to Fraser and Brooks and sign Harry Wilson they would be looking stronger next season and while Howe sees safety in signing young British internationals, Harry Wilson seems to tick all the boxes.

Clyne fits the AFCB profile

AFCB have been reported to be making enquiries about the availability of Nathanial Clyne from Liverpool after a successful loan period on the south coast. For me, Clyne is the perfect player to keep making AFCB progress. He is an international who has been with one of the top six clubs and he works hard at his game.
Where does Clyne see his future?
The right-back position could well be Nathaniel's next season if he does sign on a permanent deal. While Simon Francis will be making his comeback and Adam Smith is often seen as the utility man, Clyne has a great chance of having a starting spot and perhaps vying to get his England place back. From Clyne's point of view, he knows how AFCB play now and he has a choice to make with going back to Liverpool and being the player behind Alexander-Arnold in the pecking order.

The five months that Nathaniel did have at AFCB were fairly successful. He was dropped for a couple of games before getting his place back at the end of the season, but it was perhaps important for Eddie Howe to show Clyne that he had to keep progressing if he was to keep his spot in the Bournemouth team.

AFCB could find that other teams are also willing to pay for Clyne's services - Napoli are said to be one such club and West Ham are also interested. Still AFCB have to be in a good position after Cardiff, another interested team last January, have been relegated and Clyne knows he can get game time at AFCB. The defining matter might be the price. While suggested figures of £15m have been murmured, AFCB would be buying an international player with some great experience and that makes him a superb buy in my opinion. He can fit in from game one and you can't say that about every purchase you make in the summer window.

An alternative option is Connor Roberts as Swansea City whom AFCB have been linked with on Wales online. AFCB are not afraid of dropping down to the Championship for players, but not all of them have been as successful as David Books.

What is the future for Diego Rico and Brad Smith at AFCB?

Having heard this last week that Lloyd Kelly has been signed for the Cherries as a left-back/centre-half, it is likely that two of Bournemouth's former signings will be pushed further down the pecking order. Brad Smith has been spending a season in the MLS with Seattle Sounders FC, while Diego Rico has made 12 appearances in his first Premier League season.
Brad Smith may find it tempting to stay in the MLS.
Diego Rico hasn't made a big impact yet.
Eddie Howe has been quoted as saying that Diego Rico has had "a few hurdles" to overcome but believes he can become a regular player for AFCB. What he needs is a run of games, but he is going to be under more pressure with the arrival of Lloyd Kelly.

Whether Brad Smith sees his future at AFCB is less certain. Having had so much time out on loan in the MLS, it is likely that AFCB would consider offers on the player who also found it hard to get any number of games at Bournemouth. The search for a consistent left-back who can share the work load with Charlie Daniels has been a problem since AFCB got to the Premier League. We can add Tyrone Mings to the players who could have taken that spot, but Eddie Howe has not been able to find any of the options as safe cover.

Lloyd Kelly has made no secret of the fact that he sees his long term playing position as a centre-back, which gives me the impression that Rico is going to be continually encouraged to try and make the grade at left-back. But Kelly could well be tried first in that position now.

Would it be a mistake to let Mings leave?

This coming Bank Holiday Monday, Tyrone Mings is expected to be a central figure in trying to get Aston Villa to the Premier League in the Championship play-off final with Derby Country. Tyrone has been at Aston Villa since January, when their up-turn in form has pushed them towards their tilt at Premier League football. But what will happen after the match if Aston Villa do get promoted?
Tyrone could find he books a place in next year's Premier League but not
with AFCB if Aston Villa win on Monday and sign him in the summer on a permanent deal.
Tyrone is still a Bournemouth player and at first Eddie Howe may well have just wanted him to get out an play games having had a long-term injury. Whether it was in AFCB's mind to get him out on loan to try and get him to move club is not so clear. But Tyrone has never had a successful run of games in the starting just 11 for AFCB, and while has been excellent when he has played, the injuries have really held his AFCB career back. It could be a point in time where AFCB decide they can recoup some money for him by letting him move on.

I am sure Aston Villa would be an interested party, if Mings does want to move on, and if he were to play for Aston Villa in the Premier League it would be just reward for Mings who has been as unlucky as any player trying to play his football in the Premier League.

Bournemouth have a problem in defence themselves with conceding too many goals and I felt that Mings has the qualities to be a great player for AFCB.  While Chris Mepham and Lloyd Kelly have been brought in and while Jack Simpson has fought his way into selections, there doesn't seem the same opportunity for Tyrone. I always felt Tyrone was one of AFCB's best natural defenders and the fact that he could play left back as well as central back was a great flexibility that AFCB could have done with last season.

I fear the clock has just run on too long for Mings at AFCB and that he will go this summer. But if that is the case, I wish him much better luck than he has had with injuries at AFCB.

Mental inconsistency hurt AFCB's season, says Howe

Listening to Eddie Howe in his post-match report after the defeat against Crystal Palace, he didn't sound like he was going to rip up the playing manual to find a better way for Bournemouth to win games. He didn't point towards more than a few signings to strengthen the team, but he sees that the players he has can do better with better mental preparation to iron out the inconsistencies we have seen this season.
Eddie Howe picks apart last season.
How much can you do to make sure your team is mentally strong? It's down to learning from the mistakes and that is what Eddie will plan to do over the summer. It is difficult to see how Bournemouth could have made a better start to the season and for whatever reason the confidence went when they came off that initial run. It was then a battle with injuries and getting points on the road.

Bournemouth took until the latter part of the season to find their comeback button and their full desire to achieve rather than feel that results were simply going against them. It is that mental weakness that Howe sees as a crucial challenge to overcome. Whether Bournemouth can do better, if they find they get a fast start next season, we will wait to see. But when the fixtures come out, the fans will look and see whether the games point towards starting high or low in the league next season.

If Bournemouth had romped away to a big win against Crystal Palace, some of the weaknesses of the team might have been looked over. But now we all know that Bournemouth need to find more if they are to finish higher in this league. But by blooding younger players this season, it may be that AFCB are already preparing better for the future.

Are AFCB right to go for Pope as keeper saviour?

While Bournemouth have had a torrid season in terms of letting in goals, it can't be a big surprise that a new keeper is a high priority for the south coast club. There have been links with Jack Butland, as an England keeper languishing in the Championship, but the fees involved in such a move and with Asmir Begovic perhaps wanting not to make a return to Stoke City, the talk has died down. In its place comes of news that Nick Pope of Burnley could soon be a Cherry, which is perhaps the more cost-efficient choice.
Asmir Begovic looks like he is on his way out of AFCB this summer.
While Pope had a great season at Burnley the season before last, he has been unable to get a game in the last Premier League season and we don't really know what his form is like at the moment. It does kind of nark me that when it comes to picking keepers, AFCB tend to look at options that other clubs are very willing to palm off, if you'll forgive the hand pun.

Burnley are indeed overweighted with Englishman vying for the national keeper's shirt let alone their club No 1 spot, but there are surely more options than just England keepers to pick from. And don't we want a keeper who is in form? Foreign keepers dominate the Premier League and none of the top six clubs have an English keeper. Everton have Jordan Pickford, Watford Ben Foster and of course Burnley have Joe Hart and Tom Heaton, while Palace go Welsh with Wayne Hennessey, but  the days of British keepers being at the top of the game have arguably been surpassed.

It's not just about keepers who make great saves but keepers that can play out from the back with their feet. I'd argue that Pope is a great shot stopper, but is he a big improvement on what we have playing with his feet - well Boruc perhaps. Mark Travers and Aaron Ramsdale have looked very alert though in goal and does it matter if AFCB's keeper is younger than most? In a team that prides itself on keeping the ball and playing from the back is Nick Pope the right choice for AFCB? I do hope AFCB are not panicking into picking a keeper who has been an international, but is simply a cheap option and happens to be available.

Will AFCB come calling on Leeds' midfielder?

Leeds United fans must be feeling pretty sick at the moment. They have been dumped back in the Championship for another year and now face the prospect of seeing some of their best players being picked off by the likes of AFCB, who are said to be interest in their midfielder Kalvin Phillips.
Eddie Howe may make more raids on Championship players.
Having seen Lewis Cook already leave for Bournemouth in the past, it would give the impression that Leeds have become a bit of a feeder club for teams like AFCB, who can pick off their young talent with their Premier League funds almost at will. Eddie Howe has made a success of bringing in young Championship players and making them into Premier League starters. The signings are never guaranteed to work, but Howe is set on keeping much of his team British as he starts to replace the older stock that initially got the club promoted to the Premier League.

Phillips has been a major player for Leeds in 2018/19 and is known as a robust defensive midfielder. Bournemouth perhaps need more cover in that area when the likes of Jefferson Lerma are unable to play every game of the season and another enforcer option is certainly going to make AFCB stronger in the middle of the park.

Bournemouth are scoring enough goals - the best of those outside the top six, but they are letting far too may in. It's time to stop the supply of passes to the opposition attackers. If that means signing players that are not only young but British, and are available for under £15m, compared to prices of double that on the continent, clubs like Leeds Utd have to be worried. It's not just the very top clubs that are able to strip away Championship teams' best talent, as these players desperate to play in the Premier League.

Lerma's quality imprinted itself on Bournemouth's season

It was pleasing to see Jefferson Lerma go up to get his prize trophy, having scored AFCB's goal of the season. I might have preferred the team goals that Dan Gosling got on the end of against Crystal Palace, but I don't underestimate the importance of Lerma's contribution on AFCB's season.
A big first season at AFCB for Lerma.
For the first season in the Premier League, Bournemouth really had a central midfield player that could be as good as some of the central midfield players in the top six teams. It is not that Lerma found it easy to start off with either. He should be a much stronger player next season and the language barrier will be getting easier all the time.

One of the pieces in the puzzle for Eddie Howe to solve though is getting the very best out of Lerma. He has to have a fellow central midfielder who reads the game as well as he does. It may be that Lewis Cook will fulfil that function when he is fit, but the level that Lerma is at is probably two or three grades up from any of AFCB's other central midfielders at present. He is not the record signing for nothing and Bournemouth need to make sure they are getting the very best out of him.

Online-Bookies.org.uk
I can't imagine AFCB playing games with Lerma not being available. While he did get suspended for his 10 yellow cards, Bournemouth didn't have the same power and energy in midfield when he was absent. He gives the other players confidence just by being in the team, and if it is going to need a similar transfer fee to bring in another midfielder with his kind of quality, AFCB might be searching high and low for a while to find their man.

It is strange when there is all the transfer talk about some of AFCB's star players that Lerma's name never comes up. But it would not be a surprise to me if some of the clubs finishing above AFCB would start to have a look at our Colombian rock, who is just beginning to show us what he can deliver in the Premier League.

In other news, Liverpool are reported to be interested in Ryan Fraser.

Monday, 20 May 2019

Fraser 'it's all good what's happening'

The mood of Ryan Fraser after the defeat at Crystal Palace was clearly down and was honest in that he felt the team had under achieved. The question Fraser will have to ask himself is whether he wants to keep playing in a team that should challenge for the top 10 or if he is capable of taking the step up himself now?
Ryan Fraser has some thinking to do.
Always his harshest critic, Fraser says he will go away and look at his season and what he could do better himself. Fraser has developed with the Howe philosophy of working hard on your game to improve. The worry for AFCB fans is that Fraser may feel that some other players who have been at AFCB, at least as long as him, have not managed to turn potential into becoming developed, excellent players.

If Bournemouth had a team of players that wanted to be as good as Ryan Fraser the team would be in a much better place. But Fraser is dedicated to getting better and he could not have done much more in my opinion this season. He will no doubt look at what AFCB plans are for next season and make a decision based on that and what he could do elsewhere.

Bournemouth may get one more season out of the Wee-man but they would then be letting him go with his contract having run-out. So both sides, player and club, have to discuss what they both want and how the land lies in the next few days. There is something uneasy about no new contract being signed, and Fraser needs to be clear in his mind what he wants and whether he has more to offer at AFCB or not.

Ryan says everything that is happening is good. He is in a good place if you like, he wins either way, whether he stays or goes. But AFCB can't have player power driving Dean Court and they must take precautions in case the Wee-man does take flight this summer.

Bournemouth sign England U21 defender

AFCB have made their first new signing this summer as defender Lloyd Kelly of Bristol City has joined the club for a reports £13m having played two seasons in the Championship and a nine appearance for the England U20s and three for the U21s, respectively.

Photo posted on Lloyd Kelly Twitter feed:
AFCB make their first summer signing - Lloyd Kelly of Bristol City
Bournemouth have moved very quickly moved for the England U21 defender and Bristol City report that the signing was made for a record fee for them. Kelly will give new competition to AFCB's problem position of left-back. While Kelly has only played 48 appearances in all competitions for Bristol City over the last two seasons, he has clearly impressed Bournemouth's scouting team. The defender joined Bristol City form the age of 12 and is a product of the Bristol City Academy.

Lloyd only made his first team debut for Bristol City in a Carabao Cup match against Plymouth in 2017. He has since scored twice in the Championship and was awarded Championship Player of the week on 19 March 2018 for week 38 of the 2017/18 season.

Lloyd says, "The move has come around quickly, but I'm happy to be here and can't wait to start playing."

Eddie Howe was equally as enthusiastic about the signing saying, "Kelly is athletic, versatile, physically excellent with a very bright future ahead of him." To sign another England U21 player is a further indication that AFCB are targeting home-nation top young professionals and that they see this strategy as one of the main pillars of the club's long-term plans to grow in the Premier League.

Lloyd will be competing with Diego Rico and Charlie Daniels for the left back position while Brad Smith is still making appearances for Seattle Sounders in the MLS.

The mid-table finish is a clear indication of AFCB's position

While we may have thought that Bournemouth would be challenging for European places after the fist couple of months of last season, the reality is that the payers came up short of what they and perhaps supporters felt was possible. There are reasons for the drop off in performances, but how far are Bournemouth away from being a side that could finish seventh or eight in the Premier League?
Are AFCB headed in the right direction?
I believe AFCB are still three or more players off of a team that could challenge for an outside European place like Wolves, Watford and Everton were fighting for last season. Bournemouth have a strong first team when everyone is fit, but we soon saw how the team can fail to register any wins when there were two or three injuries to key players. Bournemouth have to strengthen this summer in several key positions in my opinion, but Howe is set on gradual regeneration rather than revolution which could mean the signing of just two or three players, while more could leave the club.

The size of the job that AFCB's recruitment staff will have over the summer will become clear in the next few weeks, when we see who is being released and how much of the squad is staying put. Bringing in players to push AFCB into a higher league position is far from simple. AFCB have tried big names like Defoe and Begovic and AFCB have also gambled on relatively unproven players like David Brooks and Chris Mepham. Bournemouth's budget is not as big as we'd like to think, and it highlights where we are in terms of recruitment and league standing when Bournemouth are linked with Ademola Lookman, who couldn't get much of a game at Everton, a team that AFCB are trying to catch up with.

So the finish of 14th in the league was a fair reflection of where AFCB are in my opinion. AFCB will have better seasons with fewer injuries that would get them a better finish, but Eddie Howe needs more depth in his squad to cover for the injury crisis the team seems to have most seasons.

Fighting qualities are not enough for AFCB

Bournemouth have made a name for themselves in previous seasons as fightback merchants. They almost did it again against Crystal Palace. Had the game run out a 4-4 draw, the Cherries would have finished a place higher and had very little to be disappointed about despite the topsy-turvy game at Selhurst park. But Palace went on to win 5-3 and Bournemouth's top striker didn't get much of a sight of goal in the final game. Bournemouth were well-beaten by a side that wasn't going to let them have it all their own way.
Leaking five goals away from home to mid-table teams
is not a sign of confidence for next season.

While Bournemouth have often been beaten by the top six with large scores, it is now not unusual for mid-table rivals to find a good day against AFCB, when they can take their chances. Arguable AFCB are not as strong on defence as we have seen in the last couple of seasons. This time it was 70 goals going in against the team.

So while Bournemouth showed good fight when things started to go against them, they found it difficult to recover in games this last season. Too often they got away to slow starts and went a goal down and when AFCB don't get on the front foot they don't do what they do best which is going forward with pace. There are holes in Bournemouth's play and players finding themselves out of position is something AFCB have to work on.

Bouncing back as Ryan Fraser said is possible some days, but when the mistakes keep coming it soon becomes too much.

In other news, Celtic could be looking to come in for Lys Mousset says Scottish Daily Mail.

Ibe gets Bournemouth's 200th Premier League goal

It's hard to know what Jordan Ibe is capable of. He may not have a troop of supporters singing his name as much as some of the other players for AFCB, but he has a talent and Eddie Howe believes he can succeed at the top level.
Jordan Ibe needs to get closer to the goal tallies of King and Wilson.
It hasn't been a landmark season for Ibe. He scored a couple of goals in the Carabao Cup and just couldn't compete as highly as David Brooks for the right wing role, although Junior Stanislas also found the young Welsh winger ahead of him. The first Premier League goal did come for Ibe against Crystal Palace in the last match, and it was Bournemouth's special 200th goal in the top league. In that way Ibe has been a part of AFCB's history and who knows what lies ahead for him?

There has been a link made with Brendan Rodgers at Leicester City. After all, Rodgers did sign the winger for Liverpool. Would Jordan see Leicester as a good move for him? I can't see Liverpool asking to see if they can take him back and the option of Leicester could entice Ibe, who has yet to make a starting spot his own at AFCB. Bournemouth may well want to let some players go this summer as well, and it is possible the club may need funds for a new left winger, with Pugh already leaving and doubts over Frasers future.

Ibe may not score that many goals, but he has only made 19 appearances in the Premier League and the majority have been as a sub. At 23, Ibe is still a young player and Eddie Howe wants to have a young squad so Ibe is probably a player that Howe would be reluctant to let go even for a good price. But what I think Ibe has to do is play in more positions and become adept at becoming a more powerful player. If he can further develop his game at AFCB under Eddie Howe, he still has time to make a bigger name for himself on the south coast.
