Bournemouth reach sixth round of FA Cup beating Burnley 0-2

Billing excels in Bournemouth's 0-2 win away at Burnley

The Cherries reached the sixth round of the FA Cup for only the second time in their history (the first time was 1956-57, even I'm not old enough to have seen that game) with a 0-2 win at Turf Moor. Jonathan Woodgate had little to be disappointed about, as Bournemouth kept a clean sheet and forged ahead in the first half with a beautifully crafted move with an overlap from Stacey who found Sturridge for the finish. The Cherries had to soak up lots of pressure in the second half but Billing and Pearson were great at snuffing out Burnley's chances and when Stanislas was brought down with just a couple of minutes to go, Stanislas made sure from the spot that Bournemouth would progress t the quarter-finals in the FA Cup.

Bournemouth made lots of changes with Stacey replacing Adam Smith, Rico came in for Kelly, Pearson made his debut replacing Lewis Cook, Billing was picked ahead of Wilshere, while Stanislas came in for Danjuma and Surridge took Shane Long's starting spot. Long was cup-tied. There was also a debut on the bench for Christian Saydee.

Burnley made eight changes from their last game.

Burnley played their usual 4-4-2, while Bournemouth set up in a 4-3-3 formation, that was a 4-5-1 when they didn't have the ball. Both teams had trouble keeping the ball early on. Vydra is caught offside.

Carter-Vickers is having to do some defending. Stanislas into Brooks, and Stanislas drives a shot wide of goal on nine minutes.

Burnley win a free kick on half-way. Stacey is looking dangerous on the overlap. Gudmundsson makes a pass back to Dale Stephens who shoots well over.

Bardsley shoots from rage but Lerm blocks it. Stanislas down the side to Surridge and Billing who has put it wide!

Chances at both ends. McNeil plays it into the area and Stephens shoots well wide. Rico goes long. Surridge in the area goes down from Long's challenge but there is nothing given. VAR is checking. It remains 0-0.

Billing puts it into Stanislas who turns and drifts the ball up to Brooks. He is away and Stacey overlaps and it's Surridge who puts it away 0-1 to Bournemouth just six yards out. 20 minutes gone. It's a slick and silky Bournemouth goal, great movement pulling Burnley apart.

Bournemouth are pushing forward. Pearson getting well involved. Options ahead of him. It's wide to Brooks and Stanislas back to Brooks, but he's lost it. Stanislas and Brooks are running the show.

McNeil wins a corner for Burnley off Pearson. Begovic punches away and the danger is cleared. 

Gudmundsson is the player Bournemouth need to look out for. Surridge again. Bournemouth look much better. Rico into the box but he loses out.

The flag is up for Burnley who have a player offside. Long ball and Dale Stevens' header is almost an own goal but it's saved by Peacock-Farrell. Is it a penalty? Billing went down. No. Why not? Billing was flattened.

Gudmundsson crosses but Glennon is beaten by Rico. Burnley are pressing here. Steve Cook gets the ball away. A minute to be added on.

Benson comes forward. Dunne pumps it forward, Vydra and McNeil and Carte-Vickers gets in and Pearson is fouled.

Second half
Bournemouth are slow coming out for the second half. Mepham is on for Jack Stacey. Carter-Vickers has gone to right-back. An awful cross from Rico goes out of play. Vydra is away and gets a shot off, but Begovic turns it around the post for a corner. Benson heads over at the near post.

Billing has a free header and puts it over from 12 yards. Bournemouth found the ball breaking to Brooks, he shoots from teh edge of teh box but it's driven over.

McNeil shoots from distance and Begovic makes a great save to his left, corner. Rodriguez misses from six yards. Dunne gets down the left, Vydra misses the ball and Rodriguez got right underneath Burnley's best chance.

Carter-Vickers concedes a corner. Bardsley shoots just inches wide. Begovic looked beaten. Another Burnley corner, but Bournemouth clear. Lewis Cook replaces David Brooks on 63 minutes.
Westwood replaces Benson on 65 minutes. Cook runs well and Stanislas can't quite find Surridge. Pearson gets an important foot in. Lerma into Stanislas who chests it down but Surridge can't keep it down, corner. Carter-Vickers free header but puts it wide.

Billing concedes a free kick. Gudmundsson is off for Lowton,  Barnes is on for Rodrigiuz and Mumbongo is coming on for Vydra. Stanislas gets around Long and wins a corner.

Just 10 minutes to hold out. Surridge is offside. McNeil is booked for pushing Lewis Cook. The ball goes in for Billing who lets it roll of his back and Surridge edges down - penalty! Junior makes it 0-2 on 88 minutes.

Bardsley is booked for a late challenge on Pearson. Three minutes of added time. Lerma takes a booking.

Summary
Bournemouth have found their new manager. If Woodgate isn't announced by the weekend, I'd be shocked. The pleasing fact about the game for me is that the players were not daunted by the task in front of them and they handled Burnley at arm's length. Begovic had a very quiet night and Billing's newfound confidence was a pleasure to watch. We are in the hat for the next round which is all you can ask for, quarter-finalists. Bournemouth now need to carry this form into the league campaign. The only disappointment was to see Jack Stacey injured.

AFCB have lost their way - a managerial change coming soon?

Bournemouth are still finding it hard to put away opposition in the bottom half of the table. They found Sheffield Wednesday in sharpshooting mood and Begovic had to make a few saves before the mistake by Mepham let them in for their goal. Tindall was clearly not happy with the team and replaced three players at half-time. Wednesday continued to fashion chances but it was the quickness of Surridge that led to the penalty and Stanislas put away his ninth goal of the season from the spot. It looked like the Cherries might go on to win the game from there but a break in the last minute of normal time saw Jordan Rhodes head Sheffield Wednesday in front again. This defeat is going to see some soul searching. It will have drained the players and if they were low before the game, they will need something special to pick them up now. I'm afraid we may be saying goodbye to Jason Tindall very soon.


UPDATE: This morning Jason Tindall has indeed been sacked by the board at AFCB.

Bournemouth gave a first start to Jack Wilshere since his new contract and Lloyd Kelly returned from injury and Junior Stanislas was also given a starting place. Ben Pearson was on the bench after signing for Bournemouth in the January window.

Match Description
The Cherries got an early warning of their need to defend their box well in the first few minutes as Elias Kachunga found himself clear in the box with only Begovic to beat. Luckily the Sheffield Wednesday player slipped and hit his shot at Begovic.

Lewis Cook was looking most likely to create something with Solanke trying to get past the last man, but Soanke didn't time his run well enough to be onside.

Bournemouth's loss of possession saw Sheffield Wednesday counter and Barry Bannan's shot from outside the box brings out the best in Begovic with a superb save to keep the game goalless. Calum Patterson then blazed wide following the corner.

The Cherries finally won a corner after 23 minutes. Kelly got in behind and his pul back to Danjuma saw a deflected shot go for a corner.

Adam Reach then went close with a shot from distance that Begovic saves. Stacey plays a good pass to Brooks who cuts inside but he's fired just wide.

A mistake at the back and Callum Paterson has scored for Sheffield Wednesday. Mepham passed it straight to the Sheffield Wednesday player instead of finding Begovic. A costly slip.

Brooks fires wide again, before the half closes with Bournemouth trailing 0-1.

Second half
Lerma, Smith and Surridge replace Wilshere, Stacey and Solanke. Kelly and Danjuma link well Before Brooks fires over at the near post.

Paterson them comes off for Jordan Rhodes to come on. Sheffield Wednesday force another corner. and Tom Lees heads wide.  Rhodes heads on to matt Penny, but the shot is high and wide.

Bournemouth force a couple of corners, but nothing is happening for them in front of goal. Adam Smith plays a ball through to Surridge and he goes down - penalty! Stanislas makes it 1-1 on 66 minutes.

Josh Windass replaces Kachunga. Lewis Cook has a shot saved. Lerma heads wide after a cross from Danjuma. Mepham plays a long ball and Brooks has a shot saved. It's all Bournemouth now.

Dunkley replaces Urhoghide, Harris is on for Palmer and Luongo comes on for Pelupessy on 79 minutes. Dunkley brings down Surridge when he was through, but it's only a yellow card. Stanislas goes close with a 30 yard Drive that Westwood saves.

Riquelme is on for Stanislas. Kadeem Harris gets down the wing and Spurs in a cross to the far post where Rhodes has made it 1-2 t the visitors on 90 minutes. Lerma has a chance but it's saved by Westwood for a corner.

Summary
Another home defeat for the Cherries and to the second bottom team. Wednesday have done the double over Tindall and with two different managers. This defeat will hurt more than the first one and while Bournemouth made changes they still made mistakes and got punished. I suppose the team is lucky they haven't got a crowd watching them in the stadium. They just can't put a performance together and you have to ask why not by now? Tindall has to come up with some answers if he is given the chance to. It's just not going to happen if the team continues to drop points like this. Losing a game in the 90th minute make sit all the more harder to swallow. We may be looking for a new manager this week as the pre-season target of promotion is looking more distant than ever.

Bournemouth continue their slide with a 3-1 defeat at Reading

Another poor performance leaves the Cherries well off the pace for promotion.

The Cherries found themselves 3-0 down in 43 minutes as they struggled to contain the hosts. While Danjuma looked lively early on, it was Reading that were hitting the target with Laurent and McIntyre firing Reading well ahead before sharpshooter Lucas João made it three before half-time. At this point, it looked like a salvage respectability mission in the second half. While their subs were the immediate response, it took until the last 10 minutes for Bournemouth fas to have something to cheer when Junior Stanislas converted a free kick into the top corner.

Bournemouth made three changes to the starting line up. David Brooks, Jack Wilshere and Lloyd Kelly made way for Dominic Solanke, Jefferson Lerma and Chris Mepham. The other big news was that Junior Stanislas was back on the bench. One onlooking spectator would also be Ben Pearson who signed from Preston North End, but there were also rumours that Matt Ritchie could be heading back to Bournemouth, while Josh King announced he would be staying until the end of the season at Bournemouth.

The Cherries started in a 4-3-3 formation with Danjuma on the left-wing and King on the right side. Danjuma had the first pop at goal with a shot from outside the box which was saved on five minutes. 

Reading looked closer to the opener when João raced between Mepham and Begovic to pick up a back pass. He passed to John Swift who shot just wide of the post with Steve Cook covering the goal. 

Reading scored following a corner as Mepham blocks a shot from McIntyre only for Josh Laurent to find the net from close range. Danjuma then had his shot blocked.

Things got worse for the Cherries when Rico made a foul and was booked. The free kick from Olise was saved by Begovic but the ball spilled out to McIntyre who made it 2-0 on 30 minutes.

John Swift was also booked for a foul on Solanke. Solanke had a header blocked following a corner before Solanke's header was saved in the top corner.

Bournemouth mounted the first attack of the second half with David Brooks' cross was met by Adam Smith's header which was too high. Begovic then had to make a save from John Swift's attempt from outside the box.

While Lewis Cook shot wide from distance, it was Reading looking more likely to score. John Swift was getting in good positions and had another shot go over. 

Reading then attacked with Ejaria firing wide. Bournemouth switched with King playing alongside Solanke up front. But the change didn't work as Reading went 3-0 up after João cuts inside and beat Begovic on 43 minutes.

Bournemouth made three changes for the second half on came Brooks, Wilshere and Smith to replace, Danjuma. Lerma and Rico. 

Josh King's burst of speed took him to the box but his shot was deflected for a corner off Rinomhota. Dominic Solanke missed a chance from the center of the box, before Billing had a shot saved that was headed for the corner of the goal. Steve Cook added the frustration with a header from a corner that was saved.

Lewis Cook was next to miss following a corner. Semedo replaced Swift for Reading who had had a good game. Reading were back testing Begovic with João having a shot saved and Laurent shooting from distance. Aluko then came on for Ejaria.

Stanislas made his return coming on for Billing in the last 10 minutes. Wilshere won a free kick and Stanislas founds the left corner - Bournemouth were on the score sheet 3-1.

King then had a shot blocked. Reading subbed Olise, João and Holmes for Esteves, Meite and Yiadom. Six minutes of added time go up.

Esteves shoots too high. Wilshere's cross is headed over by Solanke. Meite's shot is saved.

Summary
It's hard to know how Jason Tindall is going to turn this around. The team were out of their depth and just unable to compete. There's no leadership or willingness to make things easier for one another. The pressure is on and Bournemouth haven't been able to respond. They are in free fall and this is a problem that may not be a quick fix. The players have lost their confidence and their motivation under Tindall. It will be quite something if the Cherries can pick themselves up from this. There have been too many off days and it's really starting to show now.

Stanislas might be out but AFCB have players back for Luton game

The match against Luton couldn't have come at a much better time for one of AFCB's winger that comes to mind. With Junior Stanislas being out for a month it is perhaps an opportunity for Danjuma or Riquelme to get a run of games.

Tindall may change his defence for this game.

Jason Tindal was keeping his cards close to his chest on whether Chris Mepham or Arnaut Danjuma would be back for the Luton game. Cameron Carter-Vickers, Jack Stacey are also possibly in contention to be in the squad. But it is noticeable that Jason said Josh King was looking sharp in training. That could mean that Bournemouth start with King and Solanke if Danjuma is perhaps not quite ready.

With Dan Gosling being out for another week at least, there is still interest in getting Jack Wilshere to sign, but Tindall hasn't said much apart from he'd like to do a deal.

Tindall felt that it didn't matter that Bournemouth had played against Luton recently. While he talked of the tough schedule when the team played Luton last time, the pitch at Kenilworth Road wasn't great and Bournemouth ran out of ideas to some extent. That can't be repeated now. Bournemouth should have more awareness of Luton's weaknesses.

Bournemouth's problem is still consistency. The team needs to settle down a bit more in the names being picked and the performances have perhaps been better than the points accumulated. With only three defeats and nine draws. It's the draw that have been damaging compared to Swansea and Norwich who have drawn fewer games. Tindall will feel he has done. good job. The reality is that he needs to get AFCB into the automatic promotion places and the players will be aware of this.

The early part of the season has seen the introduction of lots of new players which is great as they can now be turned to if needed. But Jason should know his best team now and I want to see it on the pitch and delivering solid performances. I am not sure that all the best players are yet available though to Tindall.

Millwall stop Bournemouth from going second 1-1

Solanke nets but Millwall hit back

Bournemouth started well in this game but couldn't test Bialkowski nearly enough at first. It took some time for Millwall to show their hand, but they had chances and one clear one-on-one with Jed Wallace only stopped by Begovic's good save. The game deserved a goal and Bournemouth's slick passing eventually paid off when Stanislas slipped the ball to Solanke to score just on half time. But Millwall weren't finished, and an equalising goal on 79 minutes from substitute Matt Smith turned the night into a disappointing draw for the Cherries. The evening also saw Junior Stanislas limp off. 

The team line up for AFCB was as predicted by Cherry Chimes with nine changes from the FA Cup game. The only surprise I had was Kilkenny was on the bench instead of Ofborgh. I must do better! 
The intensity was there from the start for Bournemouth with David Brooks bursting into Millwall's box and forcing a good save from Bialkowski.

Bournemouth looked threatening from corners with Steve Cook creating a chance for Stanislas but Hutchinson just cleared the danger in time. The Cherries were dominating play and confidently passing through Millwall's press.

Begovic was made to save after Ryan Woods put a ball through for Jed Wallace and the keeper stood up well to block with his legs - the best chance of the game up to that point. Cooper headed goalwards from the corner and Lerma had to clear the ball off the line.

Millwall were gaining in confidence and Begovic had to clear before Parrott. Begovic again saved from a free kick taken by Wallace and Malone shot wide. Leonard also brought a save out of Begovic.

But Bournemouth took the lead after Rico's pass was controlled by Stanislas who turned and found Solanke and Bournemouth's forward put the home team ahead on 45+1 minutes. It was a powerful shot at the near post.

Millwall came out to attack the second half and Bournemouth lost Junior Stanislas to a bad foul by Ryan Leonard. It meant Billing had to come on to replace Stanislas. Millwall started to get on top and a free kick from Zohore came off the post.
Millwall made a trio of substations with Matt Smith replacing Alex Pearce and Bödvarsson came on for Parrott, while Bennett replaced Zohore. It worked a treat for the visitors as, following a free kick, Jake Cooper out jumped Kelly and fed Matt Smith, who equalised with Bournemouth's defence wide open down the middle. There was just 11 minutes to go.

With Jefferson Lerma getting booked and time running out, AFCB brought on Josh King and Riquelme, as Brooks was given a breather. Ben Thompson also came on for Millwall before Stacey replaced Rico.

There were only a couple of chances after that with Matt Smith having a header saved and Josh King shooting wide from outside the box.
Summary
Bournemouth will feel this was two points dropped, but Millwall played well and hung in when they were behind. The subs worked well for Millwall and the game was tight. Bournemouth better more sharpness in front of goal, and Begovic again did well on a night that could have seen Bournemouth lose the game if it hadn't been for their keeper.

A lucky escape from the Bet365 stadium

When we look back a league results in 2021, it will simply register a 0-1 away win for Bournemouth at the start of the year at the Bet365 stadium. NIt's not a bad place to win 0-1 away. But it wasn't the kind of victory that gave any kind of indication that Bournemouth are heading back to the Premier League. This was a poor performance. Don't be mislead that it was simply a patient way to three points. Bournemouth were more than rattled by Stoke City and they came away with three points, because Stoke didn't have their best striker available and Bournemouth did have Lewis Cook and Junior Stanislas to dig them out of a hole.

I suppose I should be more congratulatory that Bournemouth added yet another clean sheet to their total. To be honest, Begovic had little to do all match. It wasn't that he sat comfortably all evening though, as he will have seen his backline make numerous errors during the game, and was no doubt thankful that none of them led to a goal.

While most of the social media annoyance was aimed at Jack Simpson, it is clear to me that the Cherries are missing the energy and forward mobility of Jack Stacey to takes pressure off of the defence. With Jack on the pitch, opposition wingers are pushed back more. When Bournemouth had the ball they found it hard to make the 5-2-3 system work. The wing-backs were not getting into midfield and Bournemouth were outnumbered in this area of the pitch. That didn't stop Lerma from chasing everything, and it didn't prevent Lewis Cook from playing wonder balls when he did get a moment of possession. But it wasn't the flowing controlled and attacking football that we saw against Brentford.

The end result might have been three points, but the way the team played against Brentford and lost was far more pleasing to watch. You wonder how that can happen in just a couple of days?Stoke certainly exacted their high press well and nullified Bournemouth as best as they could. Had it not been for one moment of calm finishing from Stanislas, the Cherries would have just come away with a draw. The team is hanging on to Norwuch, Brentford and Swansea by the smallest thread. They will need to build some confidence before taking on Luton and have an FA Cup third-round tie against Oldham to negotiate first.

How the team needs a spark and some new energy. I suspect the answers will be sought n the return of Arnaut Danjuma and the signing of Jack Wilshere, but will it be enough to secure promotion? Bournemouth have to make the right decisions in January over players to put themselves in with the best chance of going up. Currently, they are not looking like certain bankers for promotion on recent performances.

Junior Stanislas gets AFCB out of a dire performance.

Bournemouth recorded a rare away win but they hardly impressed on a night of some pretty dour football. The difference was a single goal from Junior Stanislas which keeps the Cherries in the hunt for the promotion places. This was a game where Stoke's press and hold of the game worked well, and with Solanke missing the best chance in the first half when he had broken free, it was looking like Bournemouth had run out of ideas. But Stanislas was the calm head that put his chance away for his seventh of the season, and it was really a relief for Bournemouth fans because this was anything but a confident performance.

Bournemouth made three changes with Junior Stanislas replacing Josh King, Diego Rico coming in for Philip Billing and Sam Surridge taking over from David Brooks. King looked a bit out of touch in the previous game, so that was no big surprise, but it was more surprising to see a second out and out forward chosen above David Brooks, but it was a bold move. Diego Rico had been out for some time, so it was also good to see him get another go. There was still no Danjuma.

Match Description
There was a steady start to this game with Lewis Cook giving away the first free kick. Bournemouth soon became adapt at winning the ball back and Surridge was close to sniffing out a chance in the first four minutes before Stoke recovered.

Stoke were finding it hard to get forward, but Thompson had their first shoot which was high over the bar from inside the box.

Adam Smith had a great chance to get on the ned of a ball over the top but was tackled. Bournemouth were not finding the gaps and Stoke were gaining in confidence on the break with Fletcher shooting at Begovic who made a comfortable save on 11 minutes.

It was all a bit ragged from Bournemouth in defence. Fletcher had a decent chance from distance but hit it too high. on 14 minutes. A charge down saw Stoke City get another shot off at Begovic and Bournemouth's backline looked out of sorts. Joe Allen has a shot saved by Begovic.

Stoke had a good free kick position on 18 minutes and Thompson picked out the side netting but had Begovic worried.  Stoke were controlling the game at this stage.

Lewis Cook then made an amazing pass to Solanke on the break, but the Bournemouth forward over hits the shot when he had the goal gaping on 23 minutes. Steve Fletcher hobbles off and Jacob Brown replaces him. A free kick given away by Rico is headed wide by Nick Powell. Surridge wins a free kick in a promising area. Stanislas puts it wide around the wall, but has the corner. Lewis Cook looks the most alert of AFCB's players. It's all a bit rushed for Bournemouth. They don't look comfortable.

Solanke had an opportunity to put Solanke in but over hot the pass. Lewis Cook is doing his best but the midfield is getting overrun.

Second half
Bournemouth win a corner. A good early cross from Lewis Cook is cleared. 

Solanke does well and crosses but Bournemouth can't finish the move. The keeper comes out and parries well before Chester clears.

Brown has a shot saved by Begovic from distance. Adam Smith does the same at the other end but fires over. Thompson is booked for fouling Solanke. Chester is also booked trying to stop a throw.

Begovic drops on a low cross from McClean.

Joe Allen is forcing the game now and Powell has a shot deflected that Begovic saves. Solanke has a shot blocked. Bournemouth really need a change. Powell fouls Steve Cook when Bournemouth were in trouble from a good cross.

Sam Clucas replaces Thompson, McClean's cross is punched away by Begovic. Bournemouth sub Surridge for Brooks on 71 minutes.

McClean s booked for a foul on Brooks. Both teams look to have run out of ideas. Lewis cook spins the ball on to Stanislas and Stanislas scores on 79 minutes 0-1.

Tymon replaces McClean, Sam Vokes is also on for Smith. Adam Smith is replaced by Josh King on 85 minutes.

Solanke gets around the back and pulls it back, and Stanislas rushes in but sees his shot blocked from eight yards out. Stoke have a corner given away by Simpson. It's defended. King plays in Broks but his square ball to Solanke is cut out.

Lerma has been booked in added time. Brooks on the break finds King but Collins gets across to block.

Solanke is fouled and Souttar is in the book.

Summary
A fortunate win for Bournemouth that keeps them on course. Stoke were the better team for much of this match and Bournemouth failed to register any real attempts on goal. They were all over the place in defence at times and yet they managed to keep a clean sheet. Begovic didn't have to be at his best but Bournemouth didn't dominate the ball and were not playing that well on the counter. Even with Brooks coming on the game didn't change much, but with Josh King as well on the pitch, space was created for Stanislas to pinch the winner. Lewis Cook was the main reason why Bournemouth perhaps had the edge to win ugly.
