Defoe will want to start against France

Gareth Southgate decided to leave Jermain Defoe on the bench against Scotland last weekend. It was perhaps not the news that Defoe wanted to hear, after a week when he had to deal with speculation with AFC Bournemouth. The starts went to captain Harry Kane and Man Utd's Marcus Rashford, but Jermain will be fresh and raring to go against France.

Jermain Defoe is on England duty - will he start?
The game against Scotland was certainly high tempo and England were probably lucky to get away with a draw. The French will be just as difficult to beat, but will offer more of an attacking threat and Defoe will need to smash in any chances he gets if he is to impress Southgate, as he doesn't yet appear as the number two choice behind Harry Kane.

Defoe is used to pressure though and he will be determined to get playing in a team that is able to get forward a lot more than Sunderland were able to last season. It will have been hard to watch the game against Scotland knowing that England needed goals, but Defoe will surely get some minutes against the French who were European finalists last summer.

Jermain has 20 goals for England in 56 games which is a reasonable stat, but for a player with so much ability and speed, he has been unfortunate not to win more England caps and it is great that he many yet win a few more when he is hopefully at AFCB come the end of the summer.

England play France at Wembley in a friendly at 8pm tonight.
