Jermain Defoe becomes an OBE

Jermain Defoe has been named in the Queen's Birthday Honours and I think it is a fabulous award for the player who formed a personal attachment with his friend Bradley Lowery who fought cancer so bravely. The football star dedicated his award to the six-year-old who passed away last year, but said it was the memories that are important to him.

Defoe struck up the friendship with Bradley when he was a player at Sunderland and it quickly became national news. The Bradley story was a unique story and we all felt the bond between the two and their friendship.

The work Jermain does with his foundation for children in St Lucia and Dominica as well as the UK has already given back to homeless, abused and vulnerable children. Jermain's charity work continues to be a special way for him to connect with people and offer help to those particularly be brought up in St Lucia, Defoe's homeland. The charity has been especially busy in recent months with the devastation caused form the hurricanes that hit the Caribbean islands last year.

Jermain said "I never thought I would receive awards for stuff like this to be honest. I've mentioned before about doing things purely from the goodness of your heart and to receive an award like this is real special. I always though you just receive things from football and stuff like that, but I think it's a real special one...it's humbling to be honest. It's a good feeling, a nice feeling but it's special yeah."
