King on spot against Spain

Josh King had a pretty quiet match against Spain, but he gave the Norwegians great hope of getting a point from the game when Johnsen was bundled over on the box on 65 minutes. King was right on spot with his penalty beating David de Gea low to the keeper's left.
King almost got Norway a result against Spain.
The celebrations didn't last long though because Morata was fouled in the box on 70 minutes and Ramos cheekily chipped the ball from the spot into the roof of the net to make it 2-1. Spain had taken the lead earlier in the first half by getting behind Norway on their right side and Rodrigo had opened the scoring.

Josh King has been working hard on his spot kicks. He has had many for AFCB this season and is clearly getting more practise with Norway. While Norway play with two upfront like AFCB, King was not getting much of the ball in the first half when playing with Elyounoussi. The best chance for Norway fell to Elyounoussi just after the half hour, but de Gea made a good save.

Josh would have been pleased to get a point against Spain in group F where Norway also have Romania and Sweden in their group. King almost saved a point in the last minute of added time when his cross for the head bandaged Johnsen was headed just wide. Although the game didn't pan out so well for Norway and King, Josh will have another game under his belt against what was high-quality opposition, and if he can calm himself well enough to score from the spot for Norway against de Gea, then he will certainly feel confident for AFCB next time he steps up for a spot kick.

Should we be getting excited when AFCB win corners?

Bournemouth have scored the equal top amount of goals from corner this season in the Premier League, keeping up with Arsenal on nine goals scored. While Bournemouth are not the biggest team they have found a way of scoring from these corners and although many of the corners look wasted in games, it must be an area where the Cherries are now doing something right.
AFCB's corner movers are starting to pay off.
There is always expectation raised when the Cherries win a corner. I never quite see why it is such a great moment when the team does not beat the first man in many attempts, but something has started to click of late when corners are awarded. Against Crystal Palace the team managed an imposing 11 corners and to score from one of them is probably par for the course. It's the number of corners that Bournemouth win though rather than the high number of well-executed corners that have helped them notch up nine goals from corners.

Where Bournemouth could do with a better conversion rate is from headers. Steve Cook is the club's best headed goal scorer in having netted twice, but he is well behind Alvaro Morata who leads the field on seven. Bournemouth have been scoring along the floor though and putting in the ball from corners is clearly something that the Cherries do as well if not better than many other teams.

Josh King was the latest AFCB player to profit from the team winning a corner and scoring. It wasn't the most skilled goal of the season, but the importance of Steve Cook getting up to compete for the first header gave him the chance to gamble at the far post and Josh's movement was enough to get to the ball first. Sometimes the simple corners are the most effective even if we still like to see those like Charlie Daniels try to hit on the volley in the early moments of the match against Crystal Palace.

While Daniels, Aké and Steve Cook have been among the goals this season, I'd like to see Simon Francis perhaps get off the mark before the end of the season. So perhaps Jason Tindall can work with the captain to have a special corner for Francis before we get to the closing game in May.

Can AFCB finally get the better of Chelsea?

Chelsea may have been stretched with injuries, but they are a top side and AFCB need to keep with them in this game and try and snatch something from the game if they can. While Conte has been annoyed with his lack of options, even a weakened Chelsea side is a lot for AFCB to contend with. Their cup defeat to Arsenal will have motivated them to do better and AFCB have to fight for everything now.

AFCB go back to Stanford Bridge in search of three points.
Chelsea remain third in the league having beaten Brighton 0-4 in their last Premier League match. Another south coast match should have a similar outcome in Conte's mind, but Chelsea have been dropping points with draws against Leicester and Arsenal among their last three league matches. They are not finding scoring quite as simple as Man City and their options up front are limited when Morata is not on form or out injured. Whether Chelsea invest this January or not in a top class striker may be more important for their league placing than for the Champions League, but AFCB won't be hoping that Chelsea have to wait until the summer to pick up a star striker.

Too much focus is perhaps put on Eden Hazard when they do have an excellent and very deceptive font player in Pedro. Pedro picks up numerous goals with his movement and pace and he can be the perfect foil for Hazard on occasions.

The league cup match up at Chelsea showed that Bournemouth can take the game to Chelsea and Eddie Howe will no doubt be showing a lot of the second half play that they had against Chelsea in that game to examine what worked so well. That game was really the start of Dan Gosling playing so well in Bournemouth's central midfield, and now that Lewis Cook has also found more of a regular place in the team, I'm hoping that these two can really power AFCB to be stronger in this area of the pitch, where Chelsea feed balls forward to Hazard and Pedro.

I' m predicting 1-1 tonight but perhaps you are better at guessing how many corners there will be in tonight's game?

From Carabao ecstasy to agony in a few seconds for AFCB

Match Report
Chelsea 2 v 1 AFCB
20 December 2017
Chelsea welcome Bournemouth fans with a massive flag.
Bournemouth travelled to Chelsea perhaps more in hope than expectation having been thumped in their last game. They gave it their all though and should have forced Chelsea into extra time, but a mad last minute killed the Cherries' hopes when Dan Gosling had first sent Bournemouth fans crazy, having struck a great equaliser to cancel out Willian's early goal, only for Chelsea to run straight through Steve Cook and Simon Francis before Alvaro Morata slotted passed Boruc to send Chelsea through to the semi-finals.

AFCB go through their routines.
Chelsea rest a few star players.
There was no way Eddie Howe would pick the same side that lost to Liverpool. He needed something different and he did let youth have a chance with Jack Simpson and Lys Mousset making starts, while Aké was kept on the bench with Hyndman, Lewis Cook and Jordan Ibe as well as fit again Callum Wilson. Bournemouth lined up 3-5-1-1 although it was more like 5-3-2 in the first 20 minutes.
The first few minutes of the game were overshadowed by Ampadu's yellow card foul on Jermain Defoe. Defoe bravely plated on for 16 minutes but his right ankle wasn't right and he had to come off and be replaced by Jordan Ibe.

Bournemouth could have started better had Dan Gosling not sliced an early effort after four minutes. But Chelsea soon got their passing going and Willian was instigating much of the forward play. After 13 minutes the breakthrough came. It was an excellent move with Batshuayi making a sharp turn just over half way and releasing Kenedy who gave a slick back heel to open Bournemouth up, setting Fabregas away on the left. Fabregas merely had to square the ball to Willian and it was 1-0.

Bournemouth were finding it hard to get much possession and when they did and Adam Smith got a cross in for Mousset, the Frenchman could only head at the keeper.

Arter then robbed Willian and when no foul was given, Ibe simply ran at goal. Sadly his shooting was off the radar and he smashed his shot wide from eight yards out.

Chelsea were performing the stronger and Steve Cook made a good block from Batshuayi before Gary Cahill hit a speculative volley from 30 yards over the bar.

Bournemouth or rather Steve Cook started to make mistakes. He passed straight to Willian and had Francis to thank for clearing the danger. Surman then gave the ball away to Kenedy who shot wide.

Mousset almost stole in as the half closed but Rüdiger was always ready to cover.
Just the one goal down.
Second half
Bournemouth suddenly started to turn the game around. An early corner could have been the break they were looking for but the ball bouncing on the six yard line just wouldn't drop for a Bournemouth player.  More corners for Bournemouth would follow as they started to ramp up the pressure on Chelsea.

Arter had suddenly become a man possessed and was chasing down everything. Ibe had a shot blocked by Fabregas and Zappacosta went down injured to give Chelsea a chance to regroup. Another Bournemouth corner almost fell to Simpson but he could not get a clear header in.

Ibe was starting to create and Mousset forced another corner that eventually saw Fraser put a shot wide.

Chelsea reacted by taking Willian off and taking Pedro off on 62 minutes and bringing on Eden Hazard and Bakayoko.

Zappacosta had to watch his tackling after picking up a yellow card for fouling Ryan Fraser.  Arter was again forcing mistakes and Ibe put a good pas into Gosling who shot horribly over from a good position.

Chelsea had a moment when they could have claimed Kenedy was fouled in the box having trapped the ball between his ankles and kind of jumping over a challenge with the ball, but Lee Mason played on. It was a great bit of skill by Kenedy.

Eddie Howe subbed Mousset for Wilson in the last 19 minutes.  Jack Simpson was carded for a foul on Zappacosta, before Batashuayi was subbed for Morata to come on.

Chelsea were quick on the break again, but Francis hauled back Kenedy and was booked. The pressure was really growing now with Bournemouth knowing time was running out. Setev Cook put a shot over while Bournemouth came even closer when Fraser and the Wilson created an opening for Ibe who shot low and inches wide of the post.

Wilson then turned well in the box and caused Caballero to put out a big right hand as the ball travelled across the six yard box.

Adam Smith caught Fabregas with a ate challenge and also went into the book, but Bournemouth were fighting for everything now. The corners had not come off but a throw near Chelsea's box did the trick when the ball came out to Ibe and he squared it for Gosling to meet the pass with a first time shot straight into the right hand side of the goal 1-1. It was right on 90 minutes and we were all set for another half hour we thought.

Four minutes of added time began and wouldn't you know it. While we were still celebrating Chelsea went and won it in the next few seconds as Hazard sucked in Steve Cook and beat Simon Francis before making the pass for Morata to shatter our dreams.
A horrible way to lose right at the end.
Summary
It was an excellent performance by the Cherries despite another defeat. This was Bournemouth fighting with fire and to suffer an early goal of such quality they could have easily folded. That they didn't tells me that they do have the spirit to battle this season and to have the second half they did made the fans pretty proud to be Bournemouth supporters. While Chelsea had been brilliant in the first 45 minutes, you could have believed the players had swapped shirts at half time because it was all Bournemouth in the second half. It would have been fitting to have taken Chelsea to extra time and penalties but it was a cruel end to the game and that extra bit of quality counted in the end. Congratulations to Chelsea, but they know this was not as easy a win as they thought it would have been after the first quarter of an hour.
AFCB Line up - Arter (calf) and Defoe (ankle) came off injured.

Referee Watch: Lee Mason 7/10 He was more than generous towards Bournemouth and he did give a lot of fouls mostly Bournemouth's way. So who is complaining?

Chelsea are not quite as imperious as last season

It's hard to work out just what Chelsea are at the moment. One minute they are thumping Stoke City and beating Atlético Madrid away from home and the next they are being beaten by Burnley and Crystal Palace. Their up and down form has got pundits already writing them off from defending their Premier League title, but away from home it is only the Palace game that has really put a stick in their spokes.
Without Diego Costa, Chelsea don't seem quiet the team
they were but they still have an impressive line up.
Antonio Conte was said before the Watford win to be not worried but realistic that Chelsea could sack him if results did not improve. What Chelsea would consider an improvement is harder to put your finger on as even against Watford there were moments when the Hornets could have given Conte more of a scare. David Luiz and Gary Cahill have looked vulnerable this season and while Morata and Batshuayi have been among the goals there is a distinct  unpredictability about Chelsea. Fabregas was on the bench most of last season but has been playing a lot more this season, especially with Kante being injured, while the loss of Costa is still probably having a lingering affect around the team and the dressing room.

Unfortunately, Chelsea did not have a European Champions League game this week so they could rest their best players for this game. There has been rumours of over training at Chelsea to which the players have been upset about, but Conte is unlikely to change what proved successful for him last season. Chelsea will see Bournemouth as an easier game than many they will have but there are definite signs that Chelsea are not having all things there own way.

Meanwhile, with Asmir Begovic and Nathan Aké now at Bournemouth, the game takes on a new meaning of importance for AFCB. Players playing against their old club always like to do well and Bournemouth have a scalp, if they could get a home win against Chelsea. It would give Bournemouth 10 points from 10 games and they would be more or less back on course with where they need to be to finish out of the bottom three.

Cherry Chimes has been answering some questions from Chelsea HQ ahead of this game. So if you head over to ChelseaHQ, after 7pm, you can find out how I did under the spotlight.
