Another big day for VAR.

VAR had the biggest say in Bournemouth's match against Burnley. Chances fell to Callum Wilson and Matej Vydra in the first few minutes, but the shock of the first half was to see a Bournemouth Josh King goal ruled out by VAR for the ball previously coming off Billing's shoulder. Vydra had other chances to score as Francis struggled to keep him at bay, but so did Harry Wilson and Jack Stacey who couldn't beat Nick Pope, so it was 0-0 at half-time. That was nothing to the second half with Vydra putting the Clarets in front before Harry Wilson thought he had equalised, only to find that Adam Smith had made a handball in the build up and a penalty was awarded to Burnley with Jay Rodriguez making it 2-0. The game had gone and Burnley made sure with a late third goal from McNeil which was the pick of the goals. Even VAR hates Bournemouth now.

More bad news on the injury front saw Jefferson Lerma out with a back injury and Nathan Aké missing out having been concussed in mid-week training. Bournemouth really weren't helping themselves, but Steve Cook was back, while Rico was dropped to the bench to enable Jack Stacey to come in with Adam Smith moving to left back. Josh King also replaced Ryan Fraser on the left wing.

Burnley had their own problems with Chris Woods and Ashley Branes missing out but they brought in Jay Rodrigues and Matej Vydra.

It was a really gusty day at Turf Moor and Bournemouth could expect to be tested under the high ball with plenty of crosses aimed at Rodriguez. A former Burnley player' Brian Pilkington's life was celebrated with a minutes applause.

Match Description
Bournemouth started well enough with plenty of touches at the back. Gosling played a good ball into Callum Wilson and he crossed for King, but was just kept off the ball. A snap shot from Calum Wilson is just saved by Pope's outstretched foot. Great start from the Cherries.

King is getting plenty of the ball on the left but is held up by two Burnley defenders. Adam Smith is bringing the ball out well. Bournemouth are looking to pinch the ball whenever they can. McNeil to Rodriguez and Francis blocks for a corner.

Stacey does well to stop Burnley's McNeil on the left wing. Stacey puts a cross in but Billing doesn't connect well.

A mess between Bournemouth defenders, Billing and Stacey looked at each other and Cork has a shot from 20 yards saved by Ramsdale. Sloppy from Bournemouth.

Francis gets it all wrong against Vydra who is in behind and beats Steve Cook but Ramsdale makes an amazing save on 11 minutes, down to his left. Bournemouth were far too open and we know Vydra has the pace to trouble Francis.

Harry Wilson does well to win possession. Simon Francis and Steve Cook look nervous at the back though and concede another corner. Surman puts it out for another corner. Bardsley goes through the back of Callum Wilson and is lucky to get away without a card.

Stacey has a head injury. Harry Wilson as a drop shot but it's well wide on 18 minutes. Billing flows forward and has a shot deflected off Tarkowski for a corner on 21 minutes. It's in the cross from Surman went right across the six yard box and as it got flicked on by Billing and King could stab the ball home 0-1.

No, it's disallowed by VAR. Looks like Billing's shoulder but a very harsh decision on Bournemouth. It looked ball to shoulder and not shoulder to ball.

Cross from King and Harry Wilson heads it straight at Nick Pope! Bournemouth have had three great chances to be ahead, but haven't taken any of them. Bournemouth have at least been making chances.

Stacey wins a corner. Surman has a shot blocked. Callum Wilson can't get a shot away. Surman makes a mistake with Stacey on half way but McNeil can't make the most of it.

Gosling just gets back in time to take the ball off of Vydra as he cut in past Steve Cook. Bournemouth are starting to lose the ball in areas where they are under little pressure, it's careless. King wins a free kick against Bardesley.

Billing tackles back but has given a free kick away. Steve Cook struggles to get the ball away with the ball flicking off the defender's right hand. Vydra is offside with a ball over the top.

King in the left to Stacey and the shot is saved by Pope at his left post. At the other end Ramsadale has to come out to stop Vydra, Francis headed it backwards straight to Vydra.

Ramsdale makes a punch. Burnley getting some possession as the first half come towards a close. Francis is booked, taking down Vydra, two minutes to half -time. The ball is deflected for a corner. Ramsdale catches cleanly.

A long shot from McNeil is held by Ramsdale. More blocks by Bournemouth defenders. It's a free kick to Bournemouth. Just one minute of added time.

Second half
Francis skies a clearance. The wind is against Bournemouth this half. Gosling wins the ball well. Adam Smith gets a cross in which is knocked behind by McNeil for a corner to Bournemouth.

Taylor wins a Burnley corner. Surman heads it out on the near post. Bournemouth clear again. Callum Willson wins a soft foul. Bournemouth needed some possession. Pope punches clear.

Vydra on the break has cut inside Francis and shoots past Ramsdale it's 1-0 to Burnley on 52 minutes. VAR is reviewing the goal for a possible offside. The goal has been given. Francis just out played and over committed.

Bournemouth have to come out now. A shot from Gosling is held by Poe low to his left. Tarkowski now plays for time to slow the game down.

Callum Wilson breaks free and Harry Wilson has scored through the legs to make it 1-1 on 57 minutes, it's another VAR check. Did Adam Smith handball it? The goal has been disallowed and it's a penalty to Burnley. Ramsdale is beaten by Jay Rodrigues from the spot 2-0 on the hour.

Bardsley is booked for a foul on Josh King. Bournemouth prepare a double sub. Fraser and Stanislas are coming on. A shot from Westwood is held by Ramsdale.

Burnley win a corner off Steve Cook. Surnam and Josh King are replaced on 70 minutes. Billing concedes a free kick and Ramsdale saves from Rodriguez, down to his right.

Ramsdale against Rodriguez one-on-one but Ramsdlae wins the battle and stands big.  Steve Cook was beaten by the pass and Rodriguez should have scored.

Harry Wilson is subbed fir Solanke on 74 minutes. Solanke makes a block from Jack Cork. Another chance for Burnley and Vydra has missed at the far post. Hendrick made the play from teh right and it came across the box and it was a tap in for Vydra really.

It's becoming end to end now.  Just 10 minutes to go. A strike from McNeil and he's hit the post from 25 yards. Burnley sub Vydra from Lennon on 82 minutes. Lennon is carded for fouling Surman.

Lennon gets a cross in, but Bournemouth get it clear. Billing loses the ball. Bournemouth keep losing possession and this time they are punished as McNeil breaks and fires in a third on 87 minutes 3-0 to Burnley.

Another yellow card is handed out to Hendrick on Fraser. It's all kicking off with Adam Smith going in on Tarkowski. A yellow card to Adam Smith.

Burnley sub Cork and McNeil and on come Brownhill and Bradey on 90+1 minutes. Four minutes of added time are being played. Stacey is in and crosses and Callum Wilson has fired wide from six yards!

Solanke is taken down by Ben Mee on the edge of the box. Mee is yellow carded. Stanislas will take the free kick. It goes wide and that's it.

Summary
Bournemouth won't have many more painful games than this one. The score line was unjust, but Bournemouth didn't take their chances and VAR came in to sweep the game away from the Cherries. At the end of the day the Cherries had no luck and while as fans we can be encouraged by the first half performance. Football is cruel sometimes and Bournemouth simply have to recover better than they did in this game.

Burnley win late - just what AFCB fans feared

Northern grit and the physical game is what Burnley brought to Dean Court and while neither team really troubled the goal for the best part of 90 minutes, one cross and a simple header saw Jay Rodriguez snatch all three points for the northerners. Burnley players looked as surprised as any one in the ground that they had won it late on. Bournemouth had stumbled to another home defeat, and Eddie Howe had to reflect on another afternoon when the Cherries had failed to create and had fallen to a sucker punch in the pouring rain.

Bournemouth named an unchanged start eleven, but Callum Wilson returned to the bench following his hamstring strain. Burnley made one change with Taylor replacing Pieters in the starting eleven.

Match description
The first two headers were won by Francis and Lewis Cook, which set the tone. Francis again beat Wood to a long ball over the top next.

It was a bit slippery under foot with Billing and Fraser finding the ball zipping off the surface. Burnley were trying to load crosses into the box and won the first corner. Lerma beat Wood though to the ball at the near post.

Ashley Barnes left a high boot on Francis' face on seven minutes. Bournemouth were spreading the play well with Lerma but Rico hits a poor cross. Bling intercepted well in the middle to regain possession.

Rico crossed but it didn't quite get to Gosling. Francis again won his header. Billing was then fouled by Westwood. Stacey pulls the ball back to Lerma, but the shot is high.

Lerma clatters Barnes in the air. Burnley were getting some of the own medicine from Bournemouth's number eight. From the free kick, Tarkowski wins it at the far post, but Francis clears before Wood can get the ball in the six yard box.

Bardsley goes in on Fraser. Barnes has a long shot which goes wide for Burnley's second corner. Bournemouth are winning the first balls.

Rico, Mepham and Francis combine to clear the high ball. Fraser crosses to Lewis Cook, who has a shot blocked.

A Bournemouth free kick on the box is cleared on the half hour. Rico gets a good tackle in.

Francis fouls Barnes. Ramsdale catches the ball from the free kick. Fraser is fouled, where is the yellow card? Tarkowski was the offender this time.

Ramdale has to punch a corner ball over the bar. Ramsdale catches under pressure from Barnes. Gosling is fouled now. The ref has to start making bookings!

Three minutes added time. Westwood is booked! The ref has got yellow cards after all.

Not a lot of football being played - free kick, free kick, free kick!

Second half
Lewis Cook is subbed for Wilson. Howe changes the team shape. Stacey is now playing right midfield and it's three at the back for Bournemouth.

An early cross from King is too quick for Fraser. Billing and Stacey do well down the right. Fraser gets a cross in from the left. Pope catches it well.

Burnley have a corner on 53 minutes. Lerma heads away. Callum wins the chase against Tarkowski with ease. Fraser's cross is caught though by Pope.

Two yellow cards go out to Rico and Barnes - Rico is suspended for the next game. McNeil takes Stacey down and is booked.

Fraser was fouled by Bardsley. Hendrick was then booked for fouling Fraser. This was all stopping the flow of the game and playing into Burnley's hands.

Tarkowski fouls. King puts a ball through and it goes under Wilson's foot.

Gosling right across the box! Burnley, sub Hendrick with Lennon on 65 minutes.

Mepham heads wide from the corner!

Bad call on goal kick from the referee. That should have been Bournemouth corner. King does brilliant turn losing three players but he can't find the pass.

No advantage played. Its pulled back for a Bournemouth free kick. Poor ball from Fraser. 72 minutes gone.

Corner to Bournemouth. Rodriguez comes on for Barnes. Stacey wins a corner.

Rico wins a corner. Lerma volleys wide!

Lerma finds Stacey well but the cross is blocked. King shows great strength and control to beat two players.

McNeil is subbed for Brady. Burnley free kick is cleared. King shoulder barges, but its deemed a free kick. Ramsdale punches.

Seven minutes left. King is fouled. Billing is subbed for Solanke.

Pope clears ahead of Wilson. Offside anyway. Another Bournemouth free kick.

Cross from the right from Westwood, and its headed in by Rodriguez on 89 minutes. VAR, no handball. Goal stands.

Five added minutes. King in the box, a handball shout. Nothing doing.

That afternoon couldn't have gone much worse. 

Summary

What a shocking afternoon. Burnley's smash and grab game plan worked a treat for them. They annoyed, tormented and kicked Bournemouth's players while playing for time and yet when they needed to try and win it at the death, they found some quality. Well done to them, it's how they play and it works for them. It's effective against teams like ours.

Bournemouth didn't play their game though. That is what cost them. They might have had better protection from the referee, but they knew how Burnley would play and needed to play smarter. The real mystery for me is why didn't Eddie Howe put Junior Stanislas on when the team didn't have enough creativity in the last third. Yes, Callum can get you a goal and so might Solanke but they need creative players to set up chances.

Burnley will be a test for Bournemouth's central defenders

Simon Francis and Chris Mepham did well against Chelsea. They'll have a different test this weekend with Chris Woods and probably Jay Rodriguez lining up against them. Rodriguez has ripped AFCB apart before and Eddie Howe knows exactly how good he is having managed him at Burnley.

Simon Francis will look to have another impressive game this weekend.

The aerial battle is the first thing that should be on Francis and Mepham's minds. They have to win the headers and look for midfielders quickly when they have the ball. The ling ball should be something they are well practised at after the last few weeks, but you can bet Burnley will try the ball over the top. Ashley Barnes is probably Burnley's best striker at getting on the end of those passes, but he has had a groin injury. But who knows who Dyche will start with for sure?

In Off the Far Post

Chris Mepham did well enough against Chelsea to be enlisted in Alan Shearer's team of the week along with Jefferson Lerma. He played simple passes and made some great clearances, but I was probably more impressed with Simon Francis who had had a shocker a few weeks before against Wolves. He seemed more controlled and sure of himself fitting in at centre-back at Chelsea. Eddie Howe has faith in Mepham and Francis and with one clean sheet behind them already, he could have a new pairing on his hands that just happen to work well together than when they are individually paired with other Bournemouth centre-backs.

While Steve Cook is trying to see if he might be able to play with a wrist cast, Eddie should be impressed enough to keep with Francis and Mepham while they are doing a good job. The cover for the centre-back position is stretched with just Jack Simpson likely to be on the bench if Steve Cook isn't able to play yet. But I think Mepham and Francis may get the Christmas games now and they'll probably prefer playing Burnley to seeing what they face on Boxing Day with Lacazette and Aubameyang. Luckily they'll have a bit more time to prepare for the that fixture.

Will WBA striker be reunited with Howe?

WBA striker Jay Rodriguez has been linked with a move to the Cherries by the Express and Star, The former Burnley and Southampton forward spent last year in the Championship and scored 22 goals for the Baggies in 2018-19.

Ex-Saints number nine could be looking to hook up wth Eddie Howe again.

Having lost out in the play-offs to Aston Villa, Rodriguez would be interested in a chance to get back to the Premier League and it's not the first time that Eddie Howe has been linked with his former Burnley goalscorer. Eddie has always been fond of Rodriguez and he didn't have that many months with him at Burnley, so may still believe he is a player that he can improve.

Would Rodriguez fit in at AFCB? I am sure he would be something a bit different to what the team has in that he is a powerful number nine that can be good in the air as AFCB have found to their cost when he played for the Saints. Whether AFCbB would need to sell Defoe before they could move for Rodriguez is not clear, but this would be another experienced forward who would be at a level to challenge King and Wilson.

The asking price could be favourable if it is around the price of Solanke, but if WBA are wanting north of £20m then it might not suit AFCB quite so well. What AFCB may also have to look out for is getting caught in a bidding war with Burnley for the striker's services.

In other news, Artur Boruc has signed a one-year extension at AFCB as expected while Marc Pugh has been released.

Is Albion striker a good fit for AFCB?

 I admit, I am not a big fan of Jay Rodriguez. Perhaps it's something to do with the fact he used to play for Southampton. No, I don't think it's that. Perhaps it's just his style of play which is rugged and slightly less stylish than the forwards at AFCB currently. I am willing to be converted though, if AFCB do sign the WBA striker, especially if he finds it easy to hit the back of the net.

Rodriguez stands alone and may be from WBA team-mates
and could be set to leave them in the Championship.

Eddie Howe needs to excite fans and that is what gives me a question mark over Rodriguez. Yes, he is experienced at Premier League level, but he is no Harry Kane, not that AFCB could afford such a player. That is the crux. How many strikers out there come into AFCB's price category who have as much experience and are available?

If AFCB don't go for a player like Rodriguez they will need to settle for less experienced Championship strikers, or go seeking more foreign strikers who have no experience of the Premier League. So I can see why Rodriguez would be looked at. He adds power in the air and a sense of the unpredictable in his play. Whether he would suit AFCB's model though is hard to judge. He will certainly have to offer something unusual to get ahead of some of the strikers already at the club. Bournemouth may be viewed as a bit of a soft team and adding a player like Rodriguez could start to harden them up, but is that the kind of way AFCB want to be viewed. If AFCB had a few more battlers, with a harder edge, and not necessarily a striker with a high passing game, would it bring better success?

Still, AFCB haven't got a well-linked strike partnership at the moment and Rodriguez could be a missing factor just like Yann Kermorgant was for Callum Wilson. Rodriguez like Yann is not overly quick but he can be a good link player and will be good to play off perhaps better than the runners that Eddie seems to have as strikers currently. Whether a successful chase of Rodriguez would mean an exit for Josh King though is a switch that would disappoint a few. But, if it was a replacement for Benik Afobe it would more easily be seen as an upgrade. 

Rodriguez scored 11 goals last season in a relegated side, but only cost £12.5m from Southampton. A price of £20m sounds steep but perhaps £15m would be more appropriate.

Going a goal down to WBA was a difficult time for AFCB

Watching Bournemouth play when they had just conceded against WBA after half time felt like just about the worst part of the season. I hate it when I don't feel the players are thriving in the atmosphere and to be fair there was a lot of gloom around the Vitality stadium, because the team just weren't functioning well at all against the bottom side in the league.

Bournemouth have an unwelcome habit of falling behind in games

Dan Gosling and Lewis Cook were not much of a factor as WBA were getting success from lumping balls over the top of them and Rodriguez and Rondón were superb at holding the ball up an bringing players like Livermore and Nyom into the game. Albion might not have been a team with a lot of confidence but they had the game in their pocket and watching Ben Foster take an age to make his goal kicks seems like a repeat performance of so many other AFCB games that have run out of steam as the pressure on the players mount.

I could not see how AFCB were going to turn the game around without the crowd picking up the noise level. The game needed a special moment before Albion sucked the life out of the game. I don't think WBA dragged AFCB down to their level. WBA were very effective at what they are good at and AFCB's little flicks and tricks just were not coming off.

It needed someone to grab hold of the game and get the players pushing harder to test Ben Foster. It may not worry Howe too much that AFCB found it so difficult to get past the WBA press in the first half, because the Francis substitution disrupted AFCB's game, but he should question why Bournemouth could not get their game going. The late comebacks are terrific to watch, but AFCB don't want to be in that position in every game and it will be good to see if the break in Dubai will help them to regain some energy and purpose in their Premier League season, which still needs better consistency to ensure AFCB do get a top10 finish.

However, AFCB are almost safe and that is a good achievement with seven games to go.

Bournemouth faced WBA in a crunch match to
avoid being involved in the relegation scrap.

The cold air didn't disguise the feeling of nerves at Dean Court as Bournemouth's players set about the bottom side in the league. The fear of defeat was strangely growing in the first half with Bournemouth decidedly off colour and short of any tempo on which they regularly pride themselves. When Jay Rodriguez had a simple task to put Albion ahead on 49 minutes, there didn't seem anyway back for the Cherries. Even when Eddie Howe turned to Jermain Defoe, another comeback seemed unlikely against such a solid WBA defence, but Jordan Ibe decided to be adventurous and slammed in a shot from some 25 yards out, which Foster should never have been beaten by. The game was there for the taking and while Junior Stanislas has been disappointment often in free kick taking, he trusted in himself and his technique to find the top corner and the points were Bournemouth's!

Simon Francis would not last long in the first half which will be a worry for AFCB.

There were a couple of changes to starting line up with Josh King and Adam Smith coming into the side, while Charlie Daniels and Lys Mousset were on the bench. Marc Pugh was also back on the subs bench and Ryan Fraser, who had been a doubt for the game.

There was no quick start for AFCB. WBA won the first corner but Chris Brunt hooked his cross out of play. Bournemouth couldn't get an attack going and Nathan Aké fell to the ground in a heap when going for the ball while Francis scared everyone by turning to pass back to Begovic with Salomon Rondón lurking. Albion pressed high and the Cherries found it difficult to make any progress.

Ibe couldn't get past his man and the momentum was with WBA when Rondón's header had to be well saved by Begovic on 10 minutes. A WBA corner followed before Bournemouth went close with a Wilson header and then a Gosling header that Foster needed to save. WBA came back with Rodriguez who had a long shot that Begovic saved easily at his feet.

Bournemouth then had a problem with Simon Francis stopping with a hamstring pull. Charlie Daniels replaced him on 17 minutes. Ibe then had a shot following a Bournemouth corner, but fired wide.

Foster was kept busy by Daniels who forced a save from the Albion keeper on 22 minutes. Nyom was bursting down the right frequently, but Steve Cook was making clearances when the crosses came into the box.

Albion were posing problems though with Yacob shooting over. Adam Smith was injured but was given a yellow card for his trouble as was Jake Livermore for starting a shoving contest.

WBA came forward again with Nyom's cross being picked up by Gibbs, only for Ibe to win the ball and roll it out of play, but the officials didn't see that and so he played on.

Another Bournemouth corner led to a Steve Cook bicycle-kick attempt that was blocked.

Meanwhile, Lewis Cook was finding it hard to get his passing game going. Stanislas won and took a free kick only for Foster to save it at his near post. 

The three minutes of added time could not go soon enough for the fans. It was a poor half and a 0-0 scoreline.

A pretty poor half in terms of quality.

Begovis was probably the busier keeper first half.

Second half
Bournemouth were out early but soon found themselves under pressure with Steve Cook blocking Rondón. Wilson then broke with Stanislas who saw his shot blocked.

The next WBA attack resulted in a goal as play went up the left and a deep cross from Gibbs found Rondón at the far right post and he out jumped Aké, leaving Rdriguez with a great chance to snatch the lead from the knockdown, which he did on 49 minutes.

The goal was not totally unexpected. It was just what happens when Bournemouth aren't functioning well.

Dawson fouled King to give AFCB a free kick. Steve Cook's effort then went over. Lys Mousset was then give the call to replace an injured Adam Smith on 57 minutes. It was Gosling's turn to give the ball away next.

Lys Mousset had a couple of blocked shots and Heghazi felt the full force of them in his lower half, but didn't get any sympathy from AFCB fans. WBA were slowing the game down now.

Jermain Defoe replaced Callum Wilson on 75 minutes. Stanislas then shot just over the bar from a free kick. 

WBA also made a sub taking off Jonny Evans and sending on Matt Philipps. It was then that Ibe found the ball on the left in some space and he simply took aim and shot from distance, which took Foster by surprise, and left him staring at the ball that past him. The ball found the bottom corner of Albion's net! It was 1-1 on 77 minutes and Bournemouth were some how back on level terms.

Defoe soon won a corner as the noise from the home fans ratcheted up a level. WBA subbed Chris Brunt for Sam Field on 82 minutes and Rodriguez was sobbed for Robson-Kanu on 86 minutes, before Dawson fouled King and was booked.

Stanislas lined up his shot and from 25 yards out on the left. He stuck this one over the wall and straight into the top left corner. Bournemouth had won it 2-1 and the players ran to celebrate with Callum Wilson, almost knocking him off his feet.

Five minutes of added time still had to be negotiated. A shot from Craig Dawson almost got through but Charlie Daniels made a great clearance off the Bournemouth goal line, from Phillips' header, just before full time was up.

Bournemouth condemn WBA to another defeat.

Summary

Teams don't often under perform and come out winners. Yet, Bournemouth have a knack of turning on the quality in the last quarter of games at home. This match was not looking recoverable and how Ibe found the net out of nothing is still not clear to me. While others had held back from shooting, he was willing to have a shot to nothing and it worked. But even when he scored and was named over the tannoy, as man of the match, I said to those next to me that he isn't my man of the match, as there will be a winning goal. Sure enough, Junior Stanislas completed my prediction and it was brilliant to see him finally score from one of his free kicks - and to be the winner - that must have been special for him.

Bournemouth pick up the three points.
