Talking the talk is not the same as doing the business for AFCB

Eddie Howe was clear that the players were ready. The fitness levels were good and the players knew how important the first game would be against Palace to set the tone for their Premier League survival. So how did Bournemouth end up out of the game in 23 minutes, and unable to put a reasonable effort in to try and pull the game back?
Billing might be back but the Cherries need more
than the odd player back, they have ti play as a team.
The pressure of needing to do well was probably too much. They had built up the fact that they would play well and would really get into the opposition, so when the opposite happened they simply didn't know how to deal with it. It wasn't on the script that Luka Milivojevic would hit a screamer of a free kick from 25 yards in 12 minutes and have Bournemouth wondering what had just hit them. It was a disaster as Bournemouth didn't know how to reset.

Once the players know that the other team is playing superior football, they need a break a bit of luck or an incident to go their way to get the heads back up. That wasn't happening with no crowd for the players to feed off and few referee decisions going their way. In essence Palace grew in confidence and made a great second goal from their point of view, which just sucked any air out that had been left in Bournemouth's balloon.

It needed a player to get hold of the team and really nail on them that the performance wasn't good enough to be 0-2 down in the first 25 minutes. But we didn't see it from Steve Cook, Callum Wilson or Nathan Aké. Bournemouth need a leader and while I don't want to see Simon Francis return to right back, at least he shouted at players and let them knew when they needed to do better. I hope that some anger has been left off in the changing room and training pitch after the Palace performance. The players need to get it out of their system rather than just hoping things turn around.

Bournemouth may be lucky they have a second shot at Project Restart away at Wolves, because West Ham and Watford are still in touching distance, but Bournemouth need to walk the walk on the pitch and not talk the talk before the game.

Bournemouth get stuck in the starting blocks against Palace

Match Report
AFCB 0 v 2 Crystal Palace
20 June 2020

Project restart didn't begin at all for the Cherries. A master free kick from Lika Milivojevic in the first 12 minutes, and with Jordan Ayew made it 2-0 on 23 minutes, Bournemouth were chasing shadows. Zaha pulled the strings in the first 45 minutes, and Bournemouth fans expected Eddie Howe to give the Cherries a rocket at half-time. The second half offered little consolation with Josh King hobbling off from a Gary Cahill challenge. Bournemouth offered little on the big night and deserved nothing. Keeping Bournemouth up looks beyond even Eddie Howe at this moment.

Guess who's back?

Bournemouth made three changes to their last match against Liverpool. In came David Brooks, Harry Wilson and Josh King. Dropped were Ryan Fraser, Philip Billing and Junior Stanislas. Lewis Cook also got the nod over Dan Gosling in centre midfield.
It was a sunny evening with the players standing around the centre circle before kick-off ready for the Premier League music, before they took the knee for black lives matter campaign.

Crystal Palace started fast, but Bournemouth got into their stride by the second minute. David Brooks was seeing a bit of the ball early on and Bournemouth were passing well to keep hold of possession. Brooks ran well down the right but couldn't keep the ball in play, despite beating McArthur. Lewis Cook knocked the ball in on five minutes, but it was never going to stand.
Lerma was getting stuck in, and Lewis Cook made a good run down the centre of the field before he over hit a pass. Callum Wilson then put an even worse pass out on half way.

McArthur beat a few players in Bournemouth's right side, before Zaha hit a shot over in Palace's most menacing move of the opening minutes. Brooks then gave away a free kick on Zaha outside the box. The momentum was with Palace. Milivojevic struck the free kick right in the top left corner on 12 minutes, even though Ramsdale got a hand to it.

Brooks did a good reverse pass, then Josh King got a good ball through to Callum Wilson, but Cahill defended well for a corner. Brooks knocked the ball back in and Callum headed over on 17 minutes.
Stacey put a weak clearance out before Milivojevic hammered a shot over. Bournemouth have been shaken by the goal and it is all Palace for the moment.

Zaha bides his time. Van Aanholt then ran around the back of Bournemouth's right side, past Harry Wilson and Jack Stacey, and Jordon Ayew made it 2-0 from around the penalty spot, right in the bottom left corner on 23 minutes. Harry Wilson didn't track his runner and Adam Smith let Ajew run free as well.

Bournemouth look completely out of sorts. King's shot goes wider than the corner flag! Steve Cook then over hits a long ball. Brooks battles away before Lerma stabs a shot wide. If anything is going to happen for Bournemouth, it will be via David Brooks you feel.

Bournemouth finally win a corner on 35 minutes from a Stacey cross. A short corner ends up with AFCB winning another corner. At the other end, Steve Cook puts the ball out for a corner. Aké wins the header before King is fouled.

Bournemouth win a corner five minutes before half-time. Aké goes down and Benteke heads the ball out. The VAR check says the block on Aké was accidental. Harry Wilson is clipped. Brooks with a free kick over hits it.

Ayew is carded gong through on the back of Lerma. Two added minutes. Stacey gets in behind, but is blocked for a corner. Lewis Cook sops a breakaway but Adam Smith us carded for a late challenge on Zaha.

Bournemouth host the first BBC Premier League
match ever but it's a game we'll want to forget.

Second half

Harry Wilson was replaced by Arnaut Danjuma at half-time. Lewis Cook gave away a foul straight away. King is fouled on the break by Cahill. King has signalled to go off. King is on his feet but the challenge went straight through his left ankle. Solanke is coming on after 49 minutes for King.

Lerma has a shot blocked by Scott Dann. Danjuma made a good turn, before Lewis Cook slipped a shot wide.

A free kick to Bournemouth on 54 minutes was bent high by Lewis Cook, but Lerma was offside. Danjuma does well and wins a corner. Brooks and Stacey work well to get another corner.

David Brooks is subbed on 61 minutes for Junior Stanislas. Solanke plays well to win a corner taking on three players. Aké heads at goal, but the keeper saves. Aké collides with Cahill. Aké's header as the first Bournemouth attempt on goal on 64 minutes.

Milivojevic us subbed for McArthy on 65 minutes. Lewis Cook is carded for a challenge on Ayew. Crazy, he got the ball. When King had a challenge like that earlier, Cahill was not booked.

Solanke bursts through but stubs his shot wide. Ward is carded for fouling Adam Smith. Stanislas takes the following corner, but Palace come away with the ball. Stanislas tries to curl a shot but it doesn't bend. Benteke is subbed for Townsend.

Palace get their second corner. Callum Wilson is fouled on the edge of the box. Stanislas hits the wall with the free kick. Steve Cook is carded for a foul on Ajew.

Riedewald replaces MacArthur. Six added minutes go up for added time. Lerma gets frustrated with Palace keeping the ball in the corner. Callum Wilson tries to get on the end of a long ball, but Guaita wins the ball. Kouyaté takes an elbow from Lewis Cook, but VAR says not violent conduct.

A final corner fro Bournemouth. Adam Smith stops Zaha. Aké blocks Zaha and Palace have a corner.

Summary
Bournemouth made it easy for Palace. Sloppy free-kicks on the edge of the box given away and far too much space given for runners. Palace were organised and just set a line of two walls up to keep Bournemouth at arms length. Bournemouth had one shot on target and they didn't have any threat. David Brooks was the only bright spark and Eddie has much thinking to do, because on this performance Bournemouth can start planning for the Championship.

It's not just Zaha the AFCB have to worry about

Crystal Palace have been steadily accumulating points in the league and it is noticeable that their away games have been fairly profitable. While the media focuses on Wilfred Zaha, Crystal Palace have 10 other players on the pitch that are also working hard and will pose problems for the Cherries.
Zaha will have to be controlled if AFCB are to win the game.
The facts are that Bournemouth rarely manage clean sheets and Crystal Palace are regular scorers in away games this season, so beating Palace will probably need Bournemouth to get at least two goals. Wilfred Zaha is certainly the main goal threat with four goals in August and September. He is likely to be up against Adam Smith most of the time, but Zaha will no doubt play across the front line to see where their might be a weakness. He is quick and confident and we know how he can be a problem when he gets in the box. So Bournemouth have to try and keep him out wide.

Like Burnley, Crystal Palace will also be good at corners and free-kicks and they are another physical team. Luka Milivojevic and Kouyate will be tough to get past and I've been impressed with the pace and tackling of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, 20, since he has come into the team. With Van Aanholt playing the other wing-back position, it will take something to keep pushing Palace back.

Jordan Ayew has been favoured over Christian Benteke of late up front, which does take a bit of aerial ability away from Palace. Hodgson hasn't played Puncheon that much this season, but together with Alexander Sørloth and Andy Townsend, there are plenty of players that have goals in them apart from Zaha.

I'd say their best win was the 0-2 win at Fulham on the first day of the season, but  they have been unlucky not to pick up more points.

King is late goal unlocks Palace 2-2

Match Report
AFCB 2 v 2 Crystal Palace
7 April 2018
Attendance: 10,730
AFCB and Crystal Palace.
Watching a Bournemouth game is like being in the middle of a thrilling novel, with a villain, a scattering of heroes, and an ending that never quite unravels until you get to the very last page. The players are already cast of, course, with Wilfred Zaha coming in for plenty of angry chanting from the start and when you have a King and a Palace in the story, you can expect late drama. Palace took the lead early in the second half with a well-struck free kick from Luka Milivojevic and AFCB had to make a double substitution before they got any joy with Lys Mousset getting the Cherries level. Enter the villain, Wilfred Zaha, who snatched another goal for the visitors. With time running out it was looking like a sad end, but Josh King made it a third comeback in a row for AFCB and another valuable point closer to 40 points.
The ground remembered the sad loss of
Ray Wilkins with a minutes applause.
Bournemouth made three changes from the last match with Marc Pugh, Jermain Defoe and Simon Francis coming into the starting line up. Jordan Ibe was rested due to illness, Josh King was put on the bench with his hamstring, not quite 100 per cent, and Jordan Stanislas was out for the season with a knee injury at Watford. That allowed Kyle Taylor to come into the squad, but Harry Arter was again missing.

There are more pictures on Match Day Gallery.

The early parts of matches at Bournemouth often create goals, but Callum Wilson was perhaps not quite set when Daniels played an early cross in from the left that put him through on goal as he sliced across the ball and didn't even trouble Hennessey in the Palace goal. A moment later Simon Francis found Defoe at the near post, but he also mis-hit his shot.

Lewis Cook did well to recover a lost ball with his tackling back before Gosling was fouled by Van Aanholt. Wilson almost got onto another ball at the near post, while Lewis Cook was fouled by Cabaye. Steve Cook's header went straight out though.

Steve Cook was stretched at the back to give Palace their first corner, but it was met by a firm Aké's header. Bournemouth had to wait until the eighth minute to get their first corner which saw Daniels volley over from 25 yards out.

Things began to heat up on 28 minutes when Lewis Cook and Wifred Zaha got caught in a tangle and Cook was dragged half way up the pitch by Zaha. Fraser then put the ball into the box and Wilson volleyed over.

Francis was also getting forward well and crossed for Marc Pugh to head over. Another  couple of Palace corners were well defended before van Aanholt shot over.

A Bournemouth corner led Hennessey to punch out. As half time approached Loftus-Cheek almost got Zaha in up the right side, but the Palace striker over ran the ball and hesitated opting not to go down in the end.

At the other end Defoe gave a good chance to Wilson who shot wide and then punched the ball in frustration. If that was hard to believe, in added time, Wilson again had a chance to open the scoring but headed wide. So it was 0-0 at half-time.
Second half
Bournemouth needed to start well but Palace won an early free kick. The Cherries put five in the wall and Milivojevic picked the perfect spot over the top and past Begovic to make it 0-1 to the visitors on 47 minutes.

Bournemouth won a corner straight after and Lewis Cook picked the ball up as it ran out of the box and hit a rasping that was saved down to Hennessey's left for another corner. Bournemouth upped the pressure with Defoe shooting and getting another corner. This was supported by long throws from Steve Cook, but the Cherries were not getting much luck.

Palace then broke with Zaha and van Aarnholt found himself clean through against Begovic but the big keeper stretched his arms and legs out, spider style, and made the save. Townsend then had a shot blocked.

Zaha then got the wrong side of Daniels, cutting inside, but Begovic saved the shot.  A few moments later it was Steve Cook blocking Zaha.

Eddie Howe decided to put Mousset and King on with 62 minutes gone while taking off Pugh and Wilson. Bournemouth kept the ball up the Palace end by winning a corner and Daniels had a shot blocked. With AFCB switching play over to the right, Lys Mousset hardly took time to adjust his footing before with a small back lift he smashed a shot into the top right corner of the Palace net to make it 1-1 on 66 minutes. Ryan Fraser had provided another assist.

The instant strike had AFCB fans thinking their team could win this now. Francis and Zaha began a pushing match before Zaha had a shot go over. Townsend also hit a shot too high.

Mousset tried his luck again but hit his shot high, before Zaha had a header saved.

Zaha was a constant threat and he latched on to a ball on the right and ran across the edge of Bournemouth's box from right to left. He seemed to lose control at one point with Gosling in close attendance, but then the ball ran to him and his deflected shot flew past Begovic to make it 1-2 on 75 minutes. Gosling was booked for arguing.

The Cherries went three at the back in an attempt to get back into the game. Lewis Cook was subbed and Surman also came on for the last 10 minutes. Francis then picked up a yellow card for a deliberate foul on Loftus-Cheek.

Bournemouth flung everyone forward as we approached the end of 90 minutes and with a corner the ball bounced off Steve Cook's back and King could see his chance to stick the equaliser in from five yards at the far post. It was 2-2.

Three minutes of added time made for an exciting last period. Palace had Tomkins and Cabaye carded, but Palace survived the added time without conceding.
The teams after the match.
Final score.
Summary
Bournemouth are the comeback kings and refuse to be beaten at the moment. They created loads of chances to score but the ball just isn't going in for Wilson. If the first half was a bit sterile, the second half was full of incident and a fighting Cherries' recovery. We have seen many games like this now at Dean Court and the point is a welcome one, but you can't help wondering why Wilson is so out of form and  why AFCB continue to shop goals straight after half time.

Ref Watch Jon Moss 3/10. Another shocker from Jon Moss who did his best to get things equally wrong for both sides. It was a surprise that there were only four yellow cards and every time Fraser was flattened Moss simply looked to play on despite Palace coming away with the ball.

A point at Palace is hard when every tackle is a penalty!

Match Report
Crystal Palace 2 v 2 AFCB
9 December 2017
Attendance: 24,823

AFCB take on Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
What a strange game this was. Bournemouth were well in control when a swiftly taken corner move from the training ground led to a clear shot for Jermain Defoe to open the scoring, and even when Wilfried Zaha was running at Bournemouth's defence Palace did not look like scoring. Unfortunately. Begovic wanted to make sure and Zaha won the penalty to get Palace in the game, while a second Palace goal from Scott Dann, who else - he always scores against AFCB - should have given Palace a half time lead, but Defoe's remarkable lofted chip made it 2-2 at the break. Bournemouth looked to have secured a point in injury time, but Zaha was up to his old tricks and Daniels almost lost the game with a last ditch tackle on him. Justice was done though when a greedy Benteke took the spot kick and Begovic saved it t leave the score 2-2.
The Christmas spirit was going well at Selhurst Park
until the penalties started to get awarded.
Bournemouth only made one change with Steve Cook replacing the suspended Adam Smith, while Harry Artur made it back on the bench.

Crystal Palace made three changes with Ward, Kelly ad McCarthy dropping out of the starting line up and Fosu-Mensah, Cabaye and Tomkins coming into the team.

There are more pictures on Match Day Gallery.
Bournemouth and Crystal Palace go all out for a win.
Bournemouth were under pressure from the start with Jeffrey Schlupp firing over from distance. Benteke then had a chance at the near post but headed wide.

Defoe did his best to get a header just wide of the target from a right wing cross, but after some good work from King to win a corner Defoe would get another chance. This time Surman took it short to Stanislas who played it back for Surman to pick out a centrally -laced Defoe who slotted past Seproni from about 12 yards to make it one-nil on 10 minutes. Josh King had illegally held Schlupp back from making a challenge but the referee had not seen and nor had I at the time.

Palace were undeterred with Benteke forcing a save from Begovic off his knew, before Aké made a strong block from Townsend. From the Palace corner Sakho missed almost a sitter on the line with Surman in attendance, but Bournemouth scrambled the ball away.

King was working hard and almost got to Sakho at the back. Cabaye then made a great tackle on Defoe to deny him a striking chance when he was almost through. Sakho had played Defoe onside, because he was injured and had to be replaced by Scott Dann on 25 minutes.
Tomkins then fouled King and picked up a yellow card. Tomkins later had a shot from distance that went wide, even if the offside should have gone up earlier. Milivojevic then went in the book for chopping Fraser down. Stanislas almost broke through but Speroni came out quickly to deny a chance. Stanislas did get a shot off a moment later but it was deflected right at the keeper.

The game to a big turn when a long ball was headed on by Benteke to Zaha to chase. While Akee looked to have got across, Begovic came out to make sure and Zaha went down. A penalty was awarded and Milivojevic stuck it away. Zaha left his leg trailing and looked like he was already going down before Begovic made contact.

It was only three minutes later when the game changed completely and a Palace corner  was kept alive by Benteke and then Cabaye who put a low cross in from the right and Scott Dann popped up at the far post to make it 2-1.

Bournemouth were rocked but as half time approached Lewis Cook put a speculative ball forward from half way towards Defoe who not only get their first, ahead of Scott Dann, but with one bounce looped his shot over Speroni and in to the top left corner to make it 2-2. It was an absolute beauty!
Half time dancing at Palace.
Second half
Bournemouth came out early and they soon had Palace on the back foot with Surman hitting a shot at Speroni. But Begovic soon also had to make a save from Rubens Loftus-Cheek.

Stanislas was starting to see more of the ball and had a shot deflected. He then found Defoe who shot wide just in front of Dann. Bournemouth were not getting the decisions at this point.

Howe changed things to bring Ibe on for Stanislas on 65 minute and Palace too Cabaye off and brought McArthur on. Ibe did his usual in running into trouble straight away, but a few moments later he had his head down and drilled a fierce shot that Speroni could only push away.

Lewis Cook then clipped Zaha and the Palace forward lost his cool and went for Lewis Cook. It was a yellow for Zaha.

Palace were getting closer when Benteke headed a free kick on to Scott Dann who shot over from six yards. Townsend was then subbed for Sakho to come on with 12 minutes to go. Ibe was fouled by McArthur who got booked before Callum Wilson replaced Defoe with 10 minutes left.

Benteke was then booked for a foul on Lewis Cook. Palace were still mounting a challenge and Loftus-Cheek has a low shot saved by Begovic at his left post. Ibe made a terrible mistake playing the ball back towards the D when he could have cleared, but Milivojevic finally put the chance wide.

Afobe replaced King for the last three minutes. The passing became more erratic and with five minutes of added time it was Bournemouth that were hanging on. A long ball up to Zaha had Steve Cook back peddling and while he blocked a first shot from the number 11, Daniels came in with a stronger challenge to put the ball out for what looked like a corner, but Kevin Friend pointed to the spot. I couldn't believe it and nor could the Bournemouth players as Daniels looked to have made a clean attempt to get the ball. Yet, on Match of the Day's replay we did see that Daniels had touched Zaha's foot first.

Benteke was not the appointed penalty taker but he stepped up anyway having not scored all season. So it was something he'll have to explain when he saw his spot kick saved by Begovic, low to his right.

Bournemouth were not finished. They even had a shout for a penalty themselves after Wilson tried to get a shot off in the box and Schlupp had his hands up that blocked the shot.
Match line up for AFCB.
Summary
Palace possibly deserved one penalty, but two was a rather fortunate for them. Bournemouth's players were adamant that neither should have been a penalty kick, but you are not going to win every decision when you make last ditch challenges in the box. Zaha knows to go down when he feels the challenge and he was impressive in playing the victim. But Bournemouth's defenders know he would do that, and getting into those situations in the first place is the thing that should concern Howe. Still, Bournemouth showed some good moments and Defoe finally showed us how he is a goalscorer that only needs a slight chance to get his goals. While three points would have been handy from this game, it is a good point against an improving Palace side.

AFCB escape with a draw.

Referee Watch: Kevin Friend 2/10 - Far too many free kicks and penalties awarded. It was a well contested game but seven yellow cards was excessive and players were winning free kicks for just hitting the ground - unfortunately, Zaha did most of his falling over in AFCB's penalty box.
