Forget competing AFCB need to be resilient and ruthless

There was bound to be a period of adjustment in taking on Premier League clubs. The summer tried to fill some of that step up in class with games against FC Nantes and TSG 1899 Hoffeheim, but the match against Aston Villa proved that the league is not about who has the most possession or the most chances but the team who puts the ball away and makes the fewest mistakes.
It's the real thing now, not just a warm up.
Looking at the Cherries past record at home it was not surprising that they were favourites against Villa even if they did not get the result. They will need to make the home games against Leicester and Sunderland count more than ever now just to get back on track. But before then the team has a tricky couple of away games at Liverpool and West Ham where they are probably not going to be favourites. The Cherries should forget about that though, as well as the media hype and slight disappointment of the first game. It is all about having a positive attitude and going into games with the belief that they can not only compete but they can be better than the 11 on the other side of the pitch if they do their work to the  best of their ability.

We know that the players missed good chances against Aston Villa. It's going to happen at times. The general effort was high and the nerves of the first game in front of an expectant home crowd was always going to be difficult. The pressure is in a strange ways slightly reduced in the next two games in being away from home. The points are just as important and there is pressure from that point of view, but to get a result against Liverpool or west Ham would certainly kick start the Cherries' season.

Being ruthless in front of goal is what will bring the points now. For 71 minutes the Premier League new boys showed that they could keep a clean sheet and they need to extend that over the 90 minutes now. No mistakes and AFCB will get a point, and it is the kind of game plan that Tim Sherwood employed against AFCB. He was not concerned with how many shots on goal there were in the first half at Dean Court and AFCB should aim to still be in the game at half time at Anfield. If they can weather that early storm then they can look to snatch something.

Eddie Howe will set the team up to be resilient and he'll be aiming for one of his players to get that lucky break and steal the points. Going to these grounds and asking the players to out play and pass Liverpool and West Ham will be very difficult, and the defence is going to have to be on top of their game. But if they can show that metal and frustrate their will be a chance or two to get something against these teams and in Wilson, King, Gradel, Pugh and Ritchie, AFCB have the speed of attack to cause problems.

TSG 1899 Hoffenheim hold Cherries to goalless draw

Match Description
TSG 1899 Hoffenheim 0 V 0 AFCB
1 August 2015
Attendance: TBC
AFCB players check out the pitch. TSG 1899 Hoffenheim tweeted picture.
The Cherries' final pre-season match might not have been full of goals but they showed plenty of attacking ability against a top Bundesliga side. TSG 1899 Hoffenheim did not manage to force too many problems for AFCB up front but they were resolute in defence. AFCB came close to scoring a number of times with Matt Ritchie and Callum Wilson probably having the best chances but the goals will hopefully come in the next match. That leaves Junior Stanislas as the top goalscorer in pre-season.

Eddie Howe resorted two his familiar centre back pairing of Elphick and Cook for this match. It was also a last chance to impress for Adam Smith and Tyrone Mings in the back line, while Junior Stanislas and Dan Gosling were likely to be closely monitored as well as the performance of  Josh King. Christian Atsu was not in the squad and so his fitness does not look like it is good enough yet with the back injury he sustain against Yeovil Town last week. Sadly there was no live blog, but there was live streaming of the game on Player. which revealed a threadbare pitch in some wider areas.

Teams
AFCB: Boruc, Smith, Elphick, Cook, Mings, Ritchie, Gosling, MacDonald, Stanislas, King, Wilson

AFCB Subs: Allsop, Muleba, Butcher, Costa, Wakefield, Green, Quigley

Hoffenheim: Baumann, Kaderabek, Schär, Rudy, Polanski, Schmid, Zuber, Uth, Kim, Süle, Volland.

Match Description
AFC Bournemouth start well with MacDonald gets an early shot in which is saved and King puts the follow up in the side netting. The first 10 minutes go by without much incident, but Josh King is lively as he gets into the box and is just prevented from testing Hoffenheim's keeper. MacDonald way playing well, winning the ball and  beating three players before setting King on his way.

TSG 1899 Hoffenheim were trying to get more into the game but they were not creating anything to trouble Boruc in the last third. Josh King's link up play with Wilson still looks like it is work in progress, but the two are looking to get their shots away. A better chance see Wilson break into the box but his effort is saved just before the half hour mark. There was not much goalmouth activity being tweeted and at the end of the half when Ritchie swung in a free kick Wilson's header was well saved. But the nearest effort came right on half time when Ritchie was inches away from turning in a cross from Josh King, so it remain 0-0 at half time.

Second Half
AFCB have had a great run of games where they have scored if we exclude the Nantes match, but it might take something special to break the deadlock here. MacDonald does his best with a header but the keeper is there and it's still 0-0 nine minute into the second half. A corner is AFCB's only reward.

Polanski has a rare foray in AFCB's half but shoots wide. Costa replaces Mings after 68 minutes. The Cherries shooting is not better though as top winger Ritchie also misses the target at the other end with 25 minutes to go. Adam Smith also has a dig from 25 yards but the keeper is down well. The feeling is that the Cherries are getting closer to gaining a lead. Wilson is the chief mischief maker but can't scramble the ball home. Smith is going well and not afraid to beat his man. Green and Wakefield are on for Wilson and King.

Matt Ritchie's tackling skills still might need some work. He's hauled down a Hoffenheim player just 25 yards out and Boruc might have some work to do after all today. AFCB fans can relax though as it's blasted over the bar. Junior Stanislas has done his afternoon's work and is replaced by Joe Quigley.

The game looks destined to be headed for a goalless draw. MacDonald now makes way for Matt Butcher as the younger players are given a few minutes playing in the marvellous stadium. Muleba also replaces Adam Smith. Time's up, AFCB draw 0-0 in their final pre-season fixture.

Superside TSG 1899 Hoffenheim will be tough test for Cherries

TSG 1899 Hoffenheim is not a club that instantly comes to mind for most UK fans when they think of German football teams. Man City have perhaps helped put them on the map this summer with their interest in Brazilian striker Roberto Firmino. Hoffeheim are a typical mid-table Bundesliga side - they are a bit descent - finishing eighth last season. That was only two points behind Borussia Dortmund and four points behind FC Shalke 04.

The Wirsol Rhein-Neckar Arena has 21,000 seats and 9150 standing places which creates a vibrant atmosphere in a stadium that was only completed as recently as 2009. Their manager is Markus Grisdol signed a two-year extension to his contract last May, which will take him to the summer of 2018. He appears to be a disciplinarian but it has been effective for TSG Hoffenheim.

The teams rise is not dissimilar to that of AFC Bournemouth, because in 2001 they were in the third tier of German football and they only needed a season in the second-tier before winning promotion to the Bundesliga. they had been financed by Dietmar Hopp who made his fortune as a founder of the corporate SAP software giant. Four promotions in 10 years should have made them everyone's favourite second team but here is a lesson to the Cherries - they are the most hated team in German football!

Sudden success is not what the Germans feel comfortable with. Not everyone likes a winner with no history. Located near to the town of Heidelberg the local area is more famous for cement production than football. What cannot be denied though is that TSG Hoffenheim have done well and they are a model that the Cherries can learn a lot from. They've played the Byern Munich's and Bayer Leverkusen and survived.

Playing lower league teams will have certainly boosted confidence in pre-season for TSG Hoffenheim. They started off early in July by hammering SPVgg Baiertal of the Kriesliga Heidelberg (one of the bottom German leagues)16-0. Steven Zuber netted five for Hoffenheim on that occasion. FC Zuzenhausen of the Verbandsliga Baden (a sixth tier German league) also got spanked on 12 July 14-0 by Hoffenheim. TSG 62/09 Weinham of Verbansliga Baden (the sixth tier German league) were the next casualties on 18 July, when Hoffernheim and ran out 15-1 winners! I expect eddie Howe has already noted Sven Shipplock as a player that AFCB will have to cage, because he scored five in that match. I was pleased to see that Norweigan team Lillistrom SK put up a bit more resistance on 21 July when their match with Hoffenheim finished 1-1.

Next up it's the Cherries and beating a Bundesliga side is something that I am sure Eddie Howe and the players would like to add to their CVs.

Probable AFCB team: Boruc (GK), Smith (RD), Cook (CB), Elphick (CD), Mings (LD), Ritchie (RM), Gosling (CM), MacDonald (CM), Stanislas (LM), King (FW), Wilson (FW)

Update: Sheffield Wednesday are believed to be behind the non-appearance of Kenwyne Jones of Cardiff City last night. Jones missed the game as the Owls are considering taking him on a season-long loan so Kenwyne was rested and did not get the chance to reunite with his former team mates at AFCB.
