Harry Wilson's late show not enough to halt Spurs

Match Report
Tottenham Hotspur 3 V 2 AFCB
30 November 2019
Attendance: 59,626
Spurs impressive new stadium
Bournemouth's first visit to the new Spurs' stadium was the so nearly match in terms of a Bournemouth comeback. The Cherries had gone 3-0 down after 69 minutes thanks to a Dele Alli double and a well-worked goal by Moussa Sissoko. The long ball is something Bournemouth fans are beginning to hate but it has been most effective at unlocking the Cherries defence. The game looked done and dusted but then Harry Wilson was put on as a sub and he quickly got Bournemouth back in the game with a superb goal from a free kick and an added time goal. He and Callum Wilson even had a chance to make it 3-3 right at the death but they couldn't sort their feet out in time before Vertonghen snatched the chance away.

Bournemouth had to make some changes with Philip Billing already having to serve a match ban for his fifth yellow card. Jefferson Lerma came back into the centre of midfield and Danjuma was preferred to Harry Wilson on the right, while Dominic Solanke had recovered from his hamstring worries to replace Adam Smith who was ill, Jack Stacey came in to replace Simon Francis from last week's starting line up. Steve Cook was given back the captaincy.

You could tell that injuries were stretching the Cherries with Gavin Kilkenny and Christian Saydee among the substitutes for the game.
AFCB make a first time visit
While AFCB had their own problem with no sound on the BBC Radio Solent commentary of the match, we waited to see how AFCB would do on the pitch. It was good to see AFCB in their home kit and Fraser got the match underway.

Lerma missed a kick out pass from Ramsdale to put Bournemouth under pressure. Tottenham seemed happy just to keep possession early on though. Danjuma had a better second touch to get an attack away, but Rico didn't deliver the cross.

Solanke did well to find Danjumawho shot well from distance and has the keeper scrambling for a corner. Fraser's second attempt to cross was caught though by Gazzaniga.  Lerma lost possession and Alli was quick to get on the ball.

Solanke puts in a cross on eight minutes that Callum Wilson heads over. Good to see Wilson getting involved. Along shot from Rico really troubles Gazzaniga. Almost Rico's first Bournemouth goal in 10 minutes.

It's Bournemouth playing all the football. Steve Cook has to make a brave sliding tackle to stop Harry Kane running through Bournemouth's defence on 13 minutes. A great ball into Solanke from Lewis Cook and Bournemouth have a corner.

Rico does a sublime take down and turn at left back taking two Spurs players out of the game. Aurier gives the ball away. Stacey puts a cross in but Wilson can't get near it. Fraser gets a cross in but Danjuma can't get it under control. Spurs break, Kane and Son Heung-Min shoots with Steve Cook forcing the Spurs' striker wide on 19 minutes. It went just wide of the let post with Ramsdale at full stretch.

A long ball over the top, from  Alderweireld, right down the middle. Son drifts inside Stacey and touches the ball to Dele Alli and Bournemouth are a goal down on 21 minutes. Stacey, Steve Cook and Aké were nowhere near the Spurs' attackers. Stacey lost Son and a 50 yard ball has undone the Cherries - school by defending I'm afraid.

Harry Kane has a shot blocked. Stacey clears up to Fraser who is fouled. Son into Kane who gets behind, but Ramsdale saves well with his legs for a Spurs' corner. Son and Sissoko and the shot is blocked, it hits Sanchez and Sanchez smashes it in the net. It's a VAR check and handball by Sanchez, so no goal. Still 1-0 on 25 minutes.

Fraser and Rico get the ball in the box but they can't control it. Lerma has a pot shot from range but it's weak and well wide. Rico gets a foot in to break up a Spurs' attack. Wilson tries from range but it's very wide. Danjuma was free.

Aké concedes a corner. Great header from Stacey to clear. Bournemouth survive another corner. Aké gets a way with a slip. Kane gets underneath  the ball and shoots high.

Kane, a chip into Son and he's hit the side netting with Ramsdale covering his near post. Sissoko and he's nutmegged Lewis Cook, Alli passes the ball back and it hits Steve Cook's arm but never a penalty.

Bournemouth have a free kick now on 41 minutes.Fraser puts it in the box but it doesn't fall to a Bournemouth player. Danjuma gets a cross in. Lewis Cook battles back well. Solanke spares Lerma's blushes. Danjuma gets a shot off but it's right at the keeper.

Just one minute of added time. Delle Ali runs towards goal and then away from it. 1-0 at half time.

Half-time stats
Spurs possession 49%, shots 9, shots on target 2, corners 3
AFCB possession 51%, shots 8, shots on target 3, corners 2
Bournemouth are not out of it at 1-0
Second half
Lerma has fouled Ndombele. Lerma not having a great game. Ramsdale gets fingers to the cross. Solanke now is dispossessed by Alderweireld.

Another long ball picks out Alli and he's rounded the last defender and it's 2-0 on 51 minutes. Stacey and Steve Cook didn't watch the run and Alderweireld's long ball opens the door again!

Bournemouth have a free kick. It's punched out and Steve Cook's volley comes off Vertonghen for a corner. Fraser's ball in to Wilson is headed over.

Wilson's chasing a pass from Fraser but Gazzaniga gets there first. Aurier down the right, pulls it back to Alli and he's spooned it over the top.

The games opening up now. Rico is still plugging away. Ndombele and Aurier crosses, Steve Cook manages to clear somehow facing his own goal.

Harry Wilson comes o for Ryan Fraser on 63 minutes. Wilson gets the ball and Solanke, to Lewis Cook and Harry Wilson shoots over.

A ball into Alli but this time he can't take it. Rico is carded for stopping Aurier.

Son up to Alli on the left and Sissoko volleys the ball home for 3-0 on 69 minutes. That's game over. Bournemouth undone down the right side again and Rico lost his man as he peeled off.

Chance for Bournemouth, Lewis Cook drills a shot and the keeper saves low down pushing it to his left. Lewis Cook is flattened on the edge of the box. Step up Harry Wilson. Straight in the top right corner - take that José! Bournemouth are on the board.

Ndombelle is subbed for Lucas Moura on 74 minutes. Gosling replaces Lewis Cook on 74 minutes. Danjuma gets a cross over but it's too high.

Stacey has a shot that just misses the bottom left post.

Son is away and Steve cook gets back brilliantly to stop the shot. Alli again and as he comes on Ramsdale saves ow to his right. Great save. Steve Cook wasn't getting the block in that time.

Gosling out to Harry Wilson and it's come off Dier for a corner. Another corner for Bournemouth.

Danjuma into Solanke and the cross come shot is almost reached by Gosling in the six yard box. Danjuma wins a corner. Solanke pulled back for Gosling - and it's blocked! Gosling should have scored.

Lo Celso replaces Son Heung-Min on 88 minutes. Lerma is being pulled away by Ramsdale but Lerma has been carded - he had stepped on Alli's foot.

Six minutes of added time go up. Bournemouth have a corner. and Gosling heads it at the foot of the post, side netting. Alli is subbed by Winks. Danjuma gets in behind and Harry Wilson has his and Bournemouth;'s second goal 3-2. Gosling was in front of the keeper. Will the goal stand? VAR says GOAL!

A great chance, Harry Wilson and Callum Wilson are in but Vertonghen has got across and Harry Wilson can't get a shot off!  That's it 3-2.
Maybe a better result next time
Summary
Late drama almost gave Bournemouth a chance of getting something from this game.  Harry Wilson was superb when he came on and perhaps should have started. But Danjuma had played well and it was the back four that still don't look right for Bournemouth. Stacey was picked on and the long ball gave Bournemouth problems all day. Lerma will annoy Howe with his needless yellow card - nit his best game. Bournemouth have work to do and Gosling could be a player that Howe might give more than 20 minutes, while Harry Wilson must be in line for a start against Palace.

A big thanks for the pictures from Damien Hill and Michael Dunne.

  1. As you say schoolboy defending. First goal..3 defenders 2 Spurs.
Second goal 2 defenders 1 Spurs.

First rule for playing centre back..never let a long ball land
    ..get your head to it.
One up to the tactician who thinks he is special.
