Bournemouth won't need Harry Wilson next season

While Liverpool have been very keen to loan AFCB players like Nathaniel Clyne and Harry Wilson in the least two seasons and have seen the signings of Jordan Ibe and Dominic Solanke, they may find that AFCB's love affair with Anfield players is over.
AFCB are unlikely to spend further with Liverpool after recent signings.

Bournemouth have delved into Liverpool's extras for a few years now. It is clear that Jurgen Klopp's players play in a way that Eddie Howe likes and wants to bring to AFCB. However, the acquisitions of the last few years have been pretty lukewarm at best. The signings that have been particularly expensive I imagine are those of Brad Smith, Jordan Ibe and Domoinic Solanke. None of these players have been able to pin down a permanent place in the first team and they have all failed to impress. We can't really say that about Harry Wilson, this year's loan signing but if Liverpool are looking at another £20m plus for his services, Bournemouth are unlikely to be following up on the young Welshman, especially if the club is playing in the Championship in 2020-21.

Harry Wilson has been a great credit to himself and Liverpool. He deserves a crack at the big time, be it at Liverpool or another big club, and it has been great to see such a player at AFCB. It would be nice to keep hold of him, but with David Brooks coming back AFCB have no need for Harry, Wilson's contract will be also up at the end of June unless Liverpool kindly offer to let AFC have hime until the completion of the season.

Bournemouth have in all honesty bought too many Liverpool players and the record doesn't show that these players have been a great fit for AFCB. The club has been more successful in recognising talent at lower league level and bringing them through, even if it has taken more time to see some of these players come through. So, if Liverpool think they can count on AFCB to keep paying over the odds for some of their players who are not up to the grade they may have to look elsewhere for buyers this summer.

In other news, another four players test positive for COVID-19.

Will Brad Smith get a second crack at AFCB?

Last week we heard that Brad Smith was back training at AFCB having been on loan at Seattle Sounders for the past couple of seasons. The left back never made the grade first time around, but has been quite a success over the other side of the Atlantic. With Eddie Howe's injury problems, the addition of Brad Smith to the squad is certainly good timing if he stays after January.
Can Brad Smith be a useful addition to AFCB's squad for the run-in.
While Eddie Howe says, he needs to work out what is best for AFCB and for Brad to see if Brad Smith goes out on loan again or not, the left back position has been a problem all season. Diego Rico has done excellently well filling in, but he is going to be playing a lot of games and when he was suspended it was difficult to replace him.
Brad Smith would be a natural replacement whenever Howe might like to give Rico some rest bite. The bench has looked short of left back defenders with Lloyd Kelly and Charlie Daniels being absent, and Brad would surely be serving AFCB much better if he could be part of the squad for the rest of the season. He has lots of experience and knows the Premier League. It would just be a case of assessing whether Smith is up to speed or if the game for a return.

I'd like to see Rico given some competition for a starting place. Eddie usually likes every position to be competed for, and while Rico has played well he hasn't had someone really rival him of late. Everyone is going to have to be on their toes to play in the team with so many crucial games coming up. Bournemouth don't look like they are going to be lavish in their cash sending in January, and Brad Smith is ready-made to fit straight back in - it would be like a new signing.

AFCB injury crisis shows no sign of slowing

According to a report in the Bournemouth Echo, the Cherries have been hit with another two injuries before the start of the season. David Brooks has suffered ankle damage from the match against Brentford when he was subbed on 71 minutes and Lloyd Kelly is said to be out after suffering ankle ligament damage in training. Where does this leave AFCB?
Brooks out for three months!
David Brooks is likely to undergo surgery which could keep him out for more than two months, while Kelly is expected to be out for a shorter period, but will miss the opener against Sheffield United. Eddie Howe will be reshuffling his player options ahead of the first match now with long-term injuries to Simon Francis, Junior Stanislas, Lewis Cook, Dan Gosling and Charlie Daniels. Steve Cook has also not played in pre-season yet.

It makes a mess of AFCB's preparations but Howe will have to come up with a plan to fill the holes. It is probably good news for Jack Stacey who may get to play in his preferred position of right-back while Adam Smith could be shifted to the left-back position as he was for several games last season. The right wing position is now most likely to be filled by Jordan Ibe who at least has looked sharp in pre-season, but wouldn't have expected to be in front of David Brooks. How far off Charlie Daniels is from being ready we may find out this weekend.

In some ways it might be lucky that these first two games are against two newly-promoted sides but only if AFCB get the wins. If the injuries make it more of a level playing field then it could be a tough start with, who knows, more injuries, which would put extreme pressure on the players. Those like Harry Arter who might have expected a permanent move or a loan move may find that they options are cut short now with the problems that the mounting injuries are providing for selection. One player that won't be recalled is Brad Smith who has been able to continue his loan in the MLS with Seattle Sounders.

In other news, the Bournemouth Echo claims that AFCB are closing in on the signing of Dutchman Arnaut Danjuma of club Brugge rated at £13.7m and the Sun claims AFCB are preparing a £25m bid for Liverpool's Henry Wilson. AFCB may well have been forced in the last few day to consider Henry Wilson, knowing what we now do about David Brooks is out for so long.

Have AFCB dropped interest in Liverpool defender?

Nathaniel Clyne was a major part of the second half of Bournemouth's Premier League fourth season. Having come in on loan to cover for the injury to Simon Francis, he soon found his way into the team and seemed to get to grips with the AFCB style of play fairly quickly. But while I believe most Bournemouth fans were impressed enough by what they saw of Clyne, here we are in June and there has been no news of AFCB filing a bid with Liverpool for the England international.

Will we see Clyne in a Bournemouth shirt in 2019/10?
There could be many reasons why we have not heard more about a move for Clyne. Liverpool could be holding out for the best offer. Bournemouth might have ruled him out over salary demands or the potential transfer fee. Eddie Howe might have decided he's not what the team needs.

But hold on a second. AFCB let in a massive amount of goals last season and how many was Clyne responsible for? Not too many in my book. Do Bournemouth need to improve their defence? You bet, and would Bournemouth find another player who knows how AFCB works and plays to fit in at the start of next season as well as Clyne?

It may seem a no brainer to some of us fans, but AFCB usually do their best to get transfers over the line quickly in the first few weeks of the summer. That is what disturbs me about Clyne. There simply hasn't been enough talk and gossip about the player on the south coast and it could be because AFCB are held up in trying to sign another Liverpool player (Harry Wilson) as well like they did when Jordan Ibe and Brad Smith joined the club.

If AFCB are pinning their hopes on a double deal, it could end up a summer that is filled with missed opportunities. While AFCB seem intent in signing young players, there is some kind of safety in signing one player at least who is an established player in the Premier League and I had hoped that Clyne would be that player. Now I'm not so sure.

In other news, Norwich and Leeds are reported to be interested in a Mark Travers loan move next season, according to the Irish Sun. Jefferson Lerma is expected to be involved in the Cupa America match between Colombia and Argentina tonight.

What is the future for Diego Rico and Brad Smith at AFCB?

Having heard this last week that Lloyd Kelly has been signed for the Cherries as a left-back/centre-half, it is likely that two of Bournemouth's former signings will be pushed further down the pecking order. Brad Smith has been spending a season in the MLS with Seattle Sounders FC, while Diego Rico has made 12 appearances in his first Premier League season.
Brad Smith may find it tempting to stay in the MLS.
Diego Rico hasn't made a big impact yet.
Eddie Howe has been quoted as saying that Diego Rico has had "a few hurdles" to overcome but believes he can become a regular player for AFCB. What he needs is a run of games, but he is going to be under more pressure with the arrival of Lloyd Kelly.

Whether Brad Smith sees his future at AFCB is less certain. Having had so much time out on loan in the MLS, it is likely that AFCB would consider offers on the player who also found it hard to get any number of games at Bournemouth. The search for a consistent left-back who can share the work load with Charlie Daniels has been a problem since AFCB got to the Premier League. We can add Tyrone Mings to the players who could have taken that spot, but Eddie Howe has not been able to find any of the options as safe cover.

Lloyd Kelly has made no secret of the fact that he sees his long term playing position as a centre-back, which gives me the impression that Rico is going to be continually encouraged to try and make the grade at left-back. But Kelly could well be tried first in that position now.

A second summer signing for the Cherries

Charlie Daniels has been the umber one choice for the left-back position at AFCB for almost as long as I can remember. Scott Malone occupied the position before Charlie, but there is now a possibility that Diego Rico from Leganes will displace Charlie Daniels for his spot in the team.

SkySports claims that Bournemouth have paid £10.7m for Rico and are to offer the player a four-year deal. At 25-years-old, Rico has many playing years hopefully ahead of him. He has played at Leganes since 2016 when he signed from Zaragosa.
Eddie Howe has a new left-back option.
The new signing does bring up questions about Brad Smith who has been Daniels' deputy a couple of seasons and yet has found it hard to get many Premier League games. With yet another left-back arriving, it is going to be even harder for Smith to find his way into Howe's thoughts.
Daniels will still expect to fight off any new pretender. He has done it before and he works extremely hard to be the left-back and his runs are somewhat iconic now in the way he attacks on the left side. But if the Cherries are to improve their goals against record they need some players who are defenders first, in my opinion, and it will be interesting to see how attack-minded Rico is. Since joining Leganes Rico has only scored three goals so perhaps Eddie Howe is starting to look more at how his team defends now as he has great options in attack, but in recent seasons we have not seen much change in the defence.

Daniels won't have to move over immediately as Rico picked up a ban that puts him out for the first three games next season, says the Bournemouth Echo.

Should AFCB look to sell Aussie defender?

Eddie Howe has made a lot of signings since his return to the club but not all of them have been instant successes. Brad Smith is one player who must be wondering whether it was a good move for him to leave Liverpool to join Bournemouth. Since coming to AFCB he has made five Premier League appearances, all in 2016-17. However, last season he was restricted to cup games. Should he move on?

Is time running out for Brad Smith?
Brad Smith is 24 and should be a player that is at least challenging for a starting place in AFCB's side every week. Yet, Charlie Daniels has kept Smith out of the team and having had two seasons on the south cost, Smith must wonder what he has to do to get some games. It's easy to question his appetite for wanting to play as he had just as much difficulty at Liverpool. But Liverpool are a top club and AFCB are fighting to stay in the Premier League each season. Why hasn't Brad made a breakthrough yet?
Brad has been injured for part of his time at AFCB having played for Australia and been injured. Still, others have managed to force their way into the team after injuries. I am starting to question whether Eddie Howe made a wrong choice. He saw something in Brad  to want to sign him and if he has not built on that potential should we be asking whether Howe has done enough with the player?

The clock as to be ticking on Brad Smith's AFCB's career. The Cherries haven't got a squad big enough to have to carry players that never get a game. If Howe has made a mistake, I hope he is big enough to admit to it and let the player move on. Otherwise, it is about time that the club came out with some reasons why Brad Smith was signed as sitting on the bench is not the sign of a player that was brought in, because he was better than what AFCB already had at the club.

In other news AFCB announce pre-season friendly with Real Betis of Spain and AFCB have a £10m bid for Brentford's central defender Chris Mepham rejected, according to SkySports.

Is Brad Smith the unluckiest AFCB player?

Brad Smith is likely to be involved in some big matches for Australia in the next few days. First up is Saudi Arabia on Thursday 8 June, then Brazil on Tuesday 13th June before Germany on Monday 19 June. It's a tight schedule, but Brad must be relishing the chance to get some minutes in on the pitch, as he found it tough going in England last season with the form of Charlie Daniels to contend with.
Brad Smith warms up at Dean Court.
It must have crossed Brad's mind that it should have been a good move to come to AFCB and to play more games in the Premier League than he was getting at Liverpool. All he is seen though is James Milner deputise for Liverpool's lack of a fit left back, and at Bournemouth he has seen the number 11 shirt or rather the back of it in most games, as he looks on from the sidelines. He must have done something very bad in the past you'd think and yet when he has played for the Cherries in the cup games, he has not looked out of place. As far as the Premier League goes though, it's just five appearances last season two of which were as sub.

The difficulty he has had is getting a run of games and he knows that Charlie Daniels is always going to make a fight of it for the left back position. Eddie Howe always wants two quality players for every position, but even Howe must have thought that Brad has been unfortunate not to make more appearances for the Cherries. Ange Postecoglu, Australia's head coach, has to trust that Brad Smith is just as good as he was when playing for Liverpool, because he can't have seen him play many games in the last year.

Whether Brad is happy to stick his time out at AFCB or not, he will be needing to play well to give himself some confidence and to try and get Eddie Howe to give him more of a chance. The match against Saudi Arabia is likely to be his best chance to really shine in an offensive manner, but he'll also want to show what a good defender he is when the Brazil and Germany matches come up. He is on test for sure in these games and if he does well, it could give him a run in some of the friendlies that AFCB are starting to line up this summer.

Have we been short changed not seeing more of Hyndman this season?

I have been watching and listening the excellent season that Emerson Hyndman has been having in Scotland with Rangers, even though he is now sidelined with a foot injury that will keep him out for the rest of the season. His displays have been so good that he has even had Brendan Rodgers willing to part with Celtic's money to try and bring him to the other side of Glasgow, but Eddie Howe is of course having none of that.

Will Emerson play more of his football at Dean Court next season?
Emerson has along way to go having only just turned 21 in April and his four goals from 13 appearances at Rangers have already edged him up the ratings list in my book for his inclusion in next year's Premier League squad for AFCB. Eddie said in the Echo recently that AFCB had decide to change their transfer policy in deliberately going for young players with great potential rather than trying to prop the club up in the top tier with players that were experienced but coming to the end of their careers. You can say that it hasn't yet worked in the fact that AFCB fans have hardly seen Brad Smith, Lys Mousset, Lewis Cook or Emerson Hyndman in a red and black shirt, but having kept the Cherries up and having these players on the books, it will be crucial for the club for one or two of the new recruits to come through and become regular players for the first team.

We have seen it done with Ryan Fraser and I am confident that Emerson Hyndman is another that has the ability to make the grade from what we have seen him do in his short loan period up in Scotland. It is a shame we haven't seen more of him though down at Dean Court, and it demonstrates how difficult it is to balance the needs of getting results while trying to bring on players. It is rare that U21s find they can compete in the Premier League and while there are some like Marcus Rashford, Dele Alli who are at the top teams, it is quite something that Lewis Cook has managed to get a few games in his first season at AFCB.

So while I look at Hyndman and realise he has plenty of time, it is what is best for his development at this stage of his career that Eddie Howe is most concerned about and looking at what he has achieved it probably was the right kind of move for him to go to Rangers. Whether he can step up again and make a start in the Premier League will largely depend on what he can do this summer and who AFCB bring in via new transfers.

In other news, the season ticket prices for 2017/18 for AFCB have been frozen.

Lewis Cook has his chance now

Eddie Howe has reminded everyone of what a good prospect Lewis Cook is going to be for the Cherries, although we have not seen a great deal of him this season it was important for the player to get his second appearance at home this season on Saturday. While there are several central midfielders that have been ahead of him in the selection process, he now has a clear path to play his part in the last few games.
Lewis Cook should get a start against Sunderland.
Can he make the most of it?
The gentle way that Lewis has been introduced to the team will see him in good stead later down the road. He replaced the luckless Dan Gosling in the Middlesbrough game at an awkward time, just before half time. He rose to the occasion though with his great vision and passing, making the third goal for Marc Pugh with a superb switch pass out to the left wing. Now he has to continue driving himself forward and trying to have a similar impact in the next game as he is likely to be a starter now.

Lewis also played well against Spurs even though the team suffered up at White Hart Lane and it will be helpful to Lewis to have been involved in a game where he has come off the pitch a winner with team. He will be working hard now with Harry Arter to build up a good understanding and he will be looking to have a strong finish to the season.
Eddie Howe has said that Lewis Cook's attitude has been excellent despite not being picked regularly and that will have been a problem for a few of the players. Now Lewis is really needed though, as the number of central-midfielders has been further depleted with injuries. We could see a real problem if Arter or Lewis picks up an injury and a stand-in may have to play out of position just as cover. Bournemouth have a few utility players and it is likely that Brad Smith will be added to the squad just to add a bit more defensive back up, while Tyrone Mings and Junior Stanislas could probably also be used as central cover in midfield. Still AFCB are really stretched in that position now.

Rival Lines: "Arter's a better player than Wilshere," Anfield Wrap

Rival Lines
Match Preview
Liverpool v AFCB
Blogger Interview: The Anfield Wrap
Twitter: @anfieldwrap

I had a promise to keep with the Anfield Wrap as they had asked me to do some work for them last time AFCB played Liverpool and I was unable to take them up on their offer. So getting back in touch with Neil Atkinson was a chance to catch up on his opinions about the season Liverpool are having and wondering if he had got over the 4-3 game at Dean Court earlier in the season. I fear revenge could be on its way!

CC: Can you feel the pressure of the top four finish mounting on Liverpool?

AW: That pressure has been there all season. It's clearly the target on the side. Liverpool showed far more composure than Everton in the Merseyside Derby, but the path to top four becomes clearer and clearer as we get closer to the end of the campaign. I think it's very much in the club's hands at this stage – 17 points from the remaining 8 games should be enough to get what we need.

CC: Adam Lallana is going to miss some games, but do Liverpool fans only value him when they see how the team plays without him?

AW: Not anymore. Lallana has had an excellent season and Liverpool supporters in general value him very highly now. He has had a strange Liverpool career but the hope is that he is now coming into his prime. He doesn't have pace to lose and gets smarter and smarter month by month. He's so good technically. I hope he at least stays on this level for the next 2 seasons, if not even to improve.

CC: Are all the injuries now starting to hinder Liverpool?

AW: Yes. The short answer. Yes. How couldn't they? Injuries hinder every side. Liverpool will face Bournemouth short of Jordan Henderson, Adam Lallana and Sadio Mane. That is three of Liverpool's first choice front six. Each will be missed in a different way. Henderson primarily for his ability to set the pace, Lallana for his guile, Mane for his pace and goals.

CC: Has the keeper situation settled down at the club and is Joe Hart a realistic target this summer for Liverpool?

AW: I would be hugely surprised if we went after Joe Hart. I just don't see Jurgen Klopp spending that much – wages and fee – on a goalkeeper. I think the whole situation remains in flux. Had Simon Mignolet been a new signing in December people would be happy with him – one error against Chelsea aside. But he hasn't been and he still has all of that memory (as does everyone else) of not quite being reliable enough. Karius appears to be very much second choice. Danny Ward is doing very well at Huddersfield.

I have no idea what happens next.

CC: Is it fair to criticise Jurgen Klopp seeing how close Liverpool were to Chelsea before Christmas and now looking at the gap to Chelsea?

AW: In general, no. On a game by game basis Liverpool could have been a bit better and overall I think Liverpool could have both planned to be and actually been better in January. However we're talking here about being perfect. He has had a good season.

Instead he found themselves one attacker and possibly one midfielder light while dealing with a lot of games – the manager and club could have addressed that last summer. The gap is 10 points. There is every chance the season ends and it is about seven points given the nature of remaining fixtures; Chelsea have had one great run and been consistent since that run, and sometimes a side is just too good.

CC: Going out of the FA Cup to Wolves was no doubt disappointing but has it given Liverpool a better chance of getting in that top four?

AW: That the FA Cup Semi Finals are all other sides aiming to finish in the top four would suggest not. But the focus could be helpful. I think not getting to the semi-final in the EFL Cup but getting to the semi final in the FA Cup would have been more useful in terms of keeping the league momentum going.

CC: Liverpool have a good run-in with no top six sides to play but are there any fixtures that you see as the most likely to be a banana skin?

AW: All of them and none of them simultaneously. They are all games Liverpool should get three points from. That they won't get 24 points goes without saying, and so they will slip up somewhere. It's hard to know at this stage of this season who is fighting for their lives and who isn't. I thought Bournemouth had done enough to stay up, but Hull's resurgence suggests they still need to find a couple of wins and I expect them to make it extremely difficult at Anfield. Across the last two seasons there has been a massive amount of fight and togetherness about Bournemouth.

CC: Have the fans fallen out of love with Daniel Sturridge?

AW: The extent to which they were in love with him is up for grabs. I very much was. He's a ridiculously talented goalscorer but his fitness has become so difficult to manage. He won't be playing his football at Liverpool next season and that is a massive shame but that is best for him, best for the club and best for whichever club is lucky enough to have him.

CC: Are you at all surprised that Jordan Ibe and Brad Smith have found it hard to get a regular starting places in the Bournemouth team?

AW: Not at all. Brad Smith is very much one of those players who could well end up looking too good for the Championship and not quite good enough for the Premier League.

Ibe is more interesting. He clearly has a lot of the tools to be a good player but can't quite put it together. I wonder if he needs a positional shift. He did well at Anfield at right wingback but may well be worth looking at as a candidate as an attacking right back. He does his best work with space to move into.

CC: Is Jack Wilshere a player that Liverpool should be interested in making a move for over the summer?

AW: Very much not. One tick on Liverpool's criteria for summer signings has to be with reference to fitness record. Liverpool have too many players too prone to injury and before even getting in on the level of the player Liverpool need to make some harsh choices.

I also think Harry Arter is a better player than him and if Liverpool were looking for a squad option in midfield they could do a lot worse, but players where possible should play and Arter would be best served by running Bournemouth's midfield.

Adam Smith seems to have slightly gone off the boil watching from afar. I liked him last season. Josh King has recently been banging the goals in. Again, a player who needs to play though. It's boring but most players should probably stay where they are and especially working with a manager like Eddie Howe.

CC: What are your views about Eddie Howe - some see him as overrated while others see him as a future England manager?

AW: I think he has shown he is clearly very good at coaching, organising and motivating a group of players and that he has his way of playing football. He deserves enormous credit for the job he has done, especially as it is fair to say Bournemouth's recruitment hasn't been great last summer. I think his path is slightly complicated in terms of what job he does next, but I don't think that should be at the forefront of his mind. Bournemouth need a good summer and to aim to break 50 points next season. I think they are capable of that.

CC: Bournemouth have only done the double over one club in the Premier League - Swansea. Do you expect Liverpool to avoid adding to this statistic?

AW: I do but I expect a very hard game for The Reds. Patience will be key. It could well become attritional from here, the top four chase and Liverpool will need to get ahead and see the game out on Wednesday night. I would predict 2-1 Liverpool and a nervy last 10 for The Reds.

CC: There were some excellent points made by Neil there and the thought of breaking 50 points in a season seems like gold to an AFCB fan like me. Still AFCB have to aspire to do even better and while the Cherries are trying to move on from just thinking about staying in the league, Liverpool fans such as Neil are dreaming of a top four finish which I think they can get this season. Whether Liverpool give the chasers such as Man Utd and Arsenal a sniff though is down to games like this one against AFCB and the Cherries have usually performed well at Anfield so I'm also expecting a tight game.

Catch up with The Anfield Wrap which has a good diagnostic of whether redemption for the early season defeat to Bournemouth is on or not. Let's hope NOT!
