Watching Lys Mousset against Crystal Palace was perhaps just giving fans a glimpse of what the striker might be able to do next season. While Lys has played his part in 2017/18, he is going to want to be even further up the pecking order in future games, and he is finding a way of getting goals when he does put on an AFCB shirt now having netted his second Premier League goal.
Whether Lys is starting to show enough quality to get more minutes, this may become a headache for Howe. Does he risk a start or two for Mousset in the last few games? Are reputations just a bit in front of Mousset or can the Frenchman believe he will be picked on form? Eddie is very loyal to players that do well. We have seen it with Gosling and Lewis Cook and if Mousset does get in the starting line up, I think he could stay there. But we have not seen Lys start games much without Benik Afobe and it will be exciting to see if Mousset is a good match for Josh King more often now. Mousset probably needs a strong man to play with and King would offer him some good support.
The development of players is something that Howe prides more than anything else at the club and with Mousset we are starting to see a player develop into a marksman who can make his name in the Premier League. Mousset looks like he is here to stay and we can probably expect more smart finishes from him now, as he becomes well-accustomed to what it is like to play in the intensity of the Premier League.
Could Lys Mousset be a special find? |
Lys has been a quick striker. He runs with great courage and purpose, but now he is showing a different aspect of his game. For the goal against Palace he hung back and was late arriving on the edge of the box which gave Fraser the room to play a well-weighted pass to him for the goal. Lys took the ball perfectly in his stride and bent it around the defender to squeeze it in the bottom right corner of the goal. It was an extremely well-struck goal and a clean strike that gave Hennessey no chance.
