I have been one of Charlie Daniels biggest fans over recent seasons, but I expect he will have his toughest summer yet to keep his place at AFCB. Eddie Howe has certainly showed interest in Celtic's Kieran Tierney according to Sky Sports and last January Eddie watched Brentford's Chris Mepham, so defenders are on Howe's mind and the left back position has probably been a bit of an Achilles heel for the Cherries.
Daniels has done exceedingly well to play most of the Premier League games for AFCB a left back for another season, and while Brad Smith has never managed to oust him from the starting spot for any length of time, I expect things to be different next season. Whether Howe has made up his mind yet or not over how he wants next season's team to look, he can't expect Charlie to be able to make as many flying runs down the left wing in the future. We have seen Simon Francis convert to a centre-back, but while Daniels has played in a back three, there is perhaps less need for another left sided centre-back and Daniels could be finding he is more on the subs bench next season.
The problem for Eddie is picking a player who is better than Daniels and who can fit in with the team. He can't keep bringing players in like Brad Smith who hasn't made the grade and while Howe may be prepared to wait for young players like Hyndman and Mahoney to find their way, he needs fast developers like Ryan Fraser has been. Whether the Scottish game is an under tapped resource or not, AFCB seem keen to try landing Tierney and coming from Celtic it would be hoped that he could make an immediate impact.
Yet, Daniels has held off competition before and he won't loose too much sleep over another challenger. But it does give him more of an incentive to play his socks off against Burnley than one or to others. I'm certainly hoping Daniels has a good game.
