The third goal that Southampton let in was an absolute cracker form Bournemouth's point of view, but a horrendous calamity for Angus Gunn and Jan Bednarek. Southampton were going to lose the game and it probably just put a bit more gloss on the scoreline for Bournemouth, but it's the kind of goal that will get rolled out for years to come now as the goal that made Southampton look extremely silly in the south coast derby and that gifted Callum Wilson a goal.
Aaron Ramsdale was also surely pleased to get an assist. His kicks are incredibly long and this one very accurate. It is no doubt something that Ramsdale practises and it is paying off when he can pick out Wilson some 65 yards up the pitch.
Callum keeps his goal scoring going. |
Callum did not have one of his best games which was perhaps fortunate for Southampton. But Gareth Southgate was watching the game and Callum will probably be just relieved that he did get a goal in the end. It might not have been a screamer, but it was Callum's presence that caused the confusion between the defender and the keeper, and he did not well not to have fouled either player as the ball bounced between them.

The interview that Callum gave with Sky after the match was hard for him not to laugh about the goal. All he could say was that it was a gift. "I was delighted they got in a mess," he said. But Wilson used his body to back into the defender and when the ball was there to win he got his thigh up to the ball first to take it clear. He may have wanted to score from a bit closer than he did in the end, but the main thing for Callum was making sure he didn't make a mistake once he was clear. He would have found it hard to recover if he had missed an open goal.
