It was a bitter sweet goal that Jefferson Lerma scored against Newcastle. While it was his first Bournemouth goal and gave the team a chance that they might get something from the game, his stooping header at the near post cost him his second half appearance with a hamstring strain.
Scoring with a header was not how I thought Jefferson would get his scoring record started at AFCB. He has such a good passing foot and so much power that I had expected him to burst the net with a rocket when he was to open his account. But they all count and he was brave to win his header that drifted over the keeper and into the far corner of the net.
While Jefferson might not be expected to score many goals, the fact that he has opened his account will give him confidence that he can perhaps get a few more opportunities to score in games. The Newcastle goal didn't count for much but I am sure Jefferson feels he has fitted in well and is looking to add to his goal tally now.
In other news, Ryan Fraser played 73 minutes against Albania for Scotland and scored the first goal and made the assist for the fourth in Scotland's 0-4 away win. This was Ryan's first international goal.
Jefferson will hope to get a few more important goals for AFCB than the one he injured himself in getting at Newscastle. |
There are just two outfield regular players who have not scored this season for Bournemouth – Simon Francis and Lewis Cook. While it might be a while before we see Simon Francis on the score sheet, it is helpful that Lerma has broken his duck as Bournemouth simply don't get goals from central midfield players in any numbers.

It will be fingers crossed that Lerma can be fit int time for the Arsenal match. The protection he offers the defence is going to be key against the top six teams. Lerma has played a lot of games and it might be helpful that the international break comes now, but Howe will be sweating on a quick recovery for Jefferson.
